Amsterdam's legendary blues-rock Café, Maloe Melo should be on every music lover's bucket list when visiting Amsterdam. While other clubs have come and gone, this music venue has withstood the test of time. At first glance, you might be forgiven for thinking that you have come to the wrong place. On entering the premises, there is a long brown-café type bar serving a variety of very reasonably priced beers and drinks. At the furthest end of the bar, there is a pair of swing doors, beyond which the magic happens. Here you'll find an intimate area with a stage, dance floor and a smaller bar which is usually manned by Jur, the owner, an accomplished accordion player who sometimes performs with the bands. Performers come here from every corner of the globe as the place is a magnet for musicians. Entrance is usually free (No charge to come into the front bar) and even when there's a cover charge, it's always minimal and affordable, in contrast to some of the city's other music venues. Anyone wishing to discover Amsterdam's music scene couldn't be in a better place. Many of the city's top artists such as Big Frankie, Franklin Madjid, Kevin Chapman, Lamar Chase, Max Messer, Rei Satoshi and 'rock & roll' Nico regularly come here to give performances or participate in the most amazing jam sessions. Often compared to venues in London, Memphis, New York and New Orleans, Maloe Melo is in a...
Read moreI was sat down at the bar for 20 minutes and after serving my white colleague sitting next to me, the barman decided to create a rule that everyone had to go to the other side of the bar to order from him - starting with me. I eventually got up and went to the other side, and when I did two white women sat in my seat the barman proceeded to serve them before me. When I asked why he said there was no reason - and then refused to speak to me but the whole interaction made other customers uncomfortable to the point they were apologising to me for his behaviour and decided to leave. I tried to complain to the Manager who pretended not to understand what I was saying. Another member of staff told me it was my fault and I had better work out what I did to deserve that treatment. This place should feel embarrassed to play/ profit off of blues music if that is how it wants to treat its black customers. I hope it shuts down -...
Read moreIt's your real trash rock experience. You don't go here as a plan, you come here as a "what's left" kind of situation. Recently had a situation where the owner was extremely rude when we tried to smoke inside (which as you can see from other reviews it was common) and we were used to it, then suddenly he's extremely rude shouting at us to not smoke because it is not allowed and "It never was". I've even tried to talk to him twice after to explain that we're sorry we didn't know beforehand that it was not allowed anymore and tell him that he was rude and would be nice if it wasn't like that. He basically mumbled shrugged and laughed. In the middle of the non sense that he was talking he said that he got a fine for letting smoke inside. Way to own your own mistakes.
I don't recommend this place. maybe the next generation of it will be nicer because the owner would someone...
