Rob Wigboldus Fishmonger — Restaurant in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, Netherlands, we attended Rob Wigboldus Fishmonger, to try their specialty, ‘Broodje Haring’. This Dutch-delicacy-sandwich includes a small herring, filleted and kept at a fresh sashimi grade. The herring is lightly salted and pickled, short-term, likely over night. There are subtle tastes of salt, vinegar and lemon juice that can be picked up, but the dominant flavour comes from the fresh herring, which has a hearty, sweet and oily flavour.

In combination with the herring, they also use fresh white onion and Kesbeke branded pickles, a local Dutch brand which utilises a perfected recipe of sweet and sour cucumbers. The bread used is fresh, soft and white. The option for a fresh chilli paste is included at your own preference, having a medium spicy level of heat.

Update 2024. We came back to Amsterdam and ate here again. Twice during the same day! Everything was delicious and fresh. We tried 5 different things. Smoked salmon was amazing, tender. Fried cod was delicious too. We will come back next trip as well. It’s our tradition now. Please support this small business ☺️

Delicious and fresh. We tied herring sandwich, smoked eel, crab salad, fried cod, everything was super tasty! Totally will eat here again next time I’m in Amsterdam! Some people complain that cod fish is microwaved, but it is freshly cooked the same day (big amount), it’s very tender. The owner is friendly and kind. There are only 2 tables inside , but people come and go, there’s always a chance to sit and enjoy...

Went to try their salted herring and it was Super delicious - the pickles really made the fish taste pop! I ended up ordering another one after the first one because it was so good. Great quick picker-upper, right at the heart of amsterdam central. There are only two tables inside the shop as it is very small. It costs 4€ for the herring w bread and 3.5 without. I docked one star because their sanitation is a little questionable - no gloves, and they handle the food prep and money (cash only) without washing their hands… and one of the people behind the counter also coughed on someone’s food as he was...
