My wife had a craving for some good Japanese noodles, and I wanted some rice and tempura. We were wandering around the city when we stumbled upon Shiki on Zoutsteeg 5, a small "Japanese". We thought the food must be good because the place was packed.
My wife order the "prawn" tempura Udon for $18.75 USD, and I ordered the Shrimp tempura. I asked what came with my dish, and I was told shrimp.... no rice, no oshinko, no nothing. That being the case, I ordered a bowl of steamed white rice to go with my food, bringing the total my food to $25.50 USD. Mind you, this is not some upscale place, but a typically small cafe sized hole in the wall.
they brought my wife's Udon first, and about 5 minutes later my tempura and rice. Her Udon had sesame oil in it, and it was extremely salty. I received a plate with 6 shrimp, or at least pieces of shrimp. They were VERY small, in the 30/lb size. There was more crust than shrimp, and they were very greasy and oily, and the oil tasted old. The rice was inedible. Completely dried out, hard, and under cooked. I sent the rice back right away. I asked if the owner was chinese, as all the waitresses were chinese, and there was chinese music playing in the kitchen. She told me the owner was Japanese. If so, they must be absentee owners. No self respecting Japanese restaurant would attempt to pass that crap off as rice.
BTW, they only accept cash.
Be warned, save your money and stay away, even if you...
Read moreIt is a very small restaurant. When you come in the staff is friendly, but there lacks a warm atmosphere. I often eat alone when I have a long, late night at work. Of the two times ate here the place was almost empty and I got a really awkward vibe sitting there.
The first time I got the pork ramen (soup with udon noodles) for €8,-. It is tasty, but really not worth your money. There is very little meat served with the soup and the meat is of mediocre quality. The rest of the soup is only filled with some Chinese cabbage.
The second time I chose the beef ramen for €10,50, hoping to get some more. I was disappointed when I got exactly the same as my previous visit. I'm not even sure if it was beef or pork that I ate.
Conclusion: Okay experience, hygiene and staff. As far as the noodle soup goes, you pay far to much for what you get. Soup was not disgusting by any means, but just okay. I won't go here again as there are better...
Read moreI came here alone for lunch last week and ordered a pork ramen soup. I was served beef and the soup was disgusting, unable to eat it, and after a debate about the "mystery meat" with the rude waitress, I refused to pay full price but offered to pay half even though I did not eat it. When I handed the 5 euros to the extremely rude waitress and went to leave, she physically assaulted me and threw me onto a table while hitting me. Alone in the restaurant I was terrified and crying and screaming for help from people on the street. Eventually I made it to the street and the situation was diffused by helpful people. Incredibly scary, the experience really shook me. I have never encountered something like this in my life! Please avoid Shiki for you own personal safety, plus the food is atrocious!! I was unable to press charges with the police due to a lack of witnesses but filed a report in case of future...
