What started with a sophisticated experience in my one year in this city has unfortunately turned into a sad one. I’ve been a regular at this place until tonight - the comfortable joy of enjoying a great conversation with loved ones was made absolutely mediocre by a waitress I’ve never seen before, yet seemed full of disrespect to my friends and I on the occasion of my birthday eve. Her responses ranged from “Oh how can we serve you an old fashioned, it’s a wine bar” to an elaborate menu of over a dozen different spirits, to asking my friend to take off his hat (perhaps because he’s a person of color from Norway but of course she’s too naive to respect the authenticity of cultures) and confused when my friend ordered a gin because suddenly now it’s only “gin and tonics”. The cherry on top was when, despite the repeated surprised responses from our table, she mentioned that we don’t serve americano because we don’t know what that is. Upon explaining what that means since she was clearly not interested in learning, she claims she doesn’t know it because it’s just coffee (to which, I responded with what the rest of the world including my well versed friends in the NL refer to as an Americano, and I have enjoyed a refreshing cup at even the remotest taverns in this beautiful country). I’m afraid to say the claims I have made to my niche circle of executives in the city are no longer true - the attitude of the staff was shameful and regrettable. Please only visit if you’re lost, because I no longer believe in the quality of...
Read moreElected as the best wine bar of The Netherlands in 2017, and even though this was my first visit to a place officially labeled as wine bar, I could really understand why.
Staff is friendly and even though they obviously know a lot about wine are more then willing to share their advise in an informal and straight forward manner.
Interior is well decorated in a classic style and could very well be a jazz bar or speak easy bar in 1930.
Prices are a bit steep, but then again you're not ordering ordinary super market wines here. So in my opinion worth it. You can also tell the bartender what you like and he will offer you a couple of options which you can taste.
I'd also recommend asking for some bites while you're here. I really liked the big green olives.
For the record, I visited the place in jeans and sneakers, just in case you might think this is an upperclass establishment. Definitely going back...
Read moreCozy and sophisticated environment. Wide selection of wines of great quality. I have never tried the Chenin Blanc and the waiter (he looked like he was the manager/owner) gave me to try and I was absolutely delighted with it. I am a fan of Spanish and Italian wines, but I gave a try to this 2017 Rijks ‘Touch of Oak’ from South Africa. The food is excellent, however very small portions. The quality of the charcuterie and cheese is excellent, very tasty. The risotto very simple only with Parmesan, they could add some fungi. The lemon tart made me blown away, delicious. I missed that the waitresses were more professional aligned to the high quality...
