As a person that rarely puts themselves "out there" I must confess that I have made little memorable experiences after migrating to the Netherlands one year ago. However visiting Scallywags (for now the 2nd time in two weeks) has definitely satisfied that intrinsic human craving for familiar yet memorable experiences. Firstly, the location of this establishment could not be more ideal. Nestled within the Haagsche Bluf, in the center of Den Haag, the exterior and interior ambiance of Scallywags tickles at your imagination with its stylishly mismatched furniture pieces and quirky decor, all very impressive in their own regard. Upon entering, staff are always VERY pleasant and welcoming and are happy to guide you to a table. Wait times between seating and ordering are very well handled by staff, offering guests ample time to browse the well-curated menu. Food - the main reason for visiting. The food does not disappoint. I intend to try every item on the menu at least once. The classic full English breakfast is a must for those with a healthy appetite. Thick cut bacon and perfectly cooked eggs are always a hit with me. Portion sizes are good and meals are filling. Today I had the salmon, cream cheese and avocado omelette and I swear this was the best thing I've ever had in my mouth. The flavour combinations of food on this menu truly do work! Lastly, the experience of meeting Richard, the owner has left a lasting impression on me. Richard is truly a man of class, eloquent, witty, and able to engage with customers, which makes it easy to keep on coming back. I quite enjoy listening to his stories after my meal and his personality and charm are what allow me to return to Scallywags. I definitely recommend it here so do yourselves a favor and get some food.

Visited on a sunny Sunday afternoon with my mom, who absolutely adores England, to have lunch. Located next to a small square away from the main shopping streets, the environment is not too crowded, creating the perfect atmosphere to calmly drink your tea and scones. The tea selection was broad and varied and the delicious scones we had came with cream and jam included. For lunch we chose the cream tea option, for which we chose a Bacon & Guacamole toastie with a Blueberry scone and a cappuccino. Though the food was relatively simple, it is very good deal for the price you pay, not easily found these days anymore and still delicious! The service is mostly British, which adds to the authenticity. The café itself was decorated with cute pictures and props and uses very fancy and fun plates and teacups. Furniture was basic, but adds perfectly to the homey/cosy feeling the café is going for. They also play classical music in the background. All-in-all a perfect café for if you feel like going for that British experience, or simply want to enjoy a nice tea, coffee or lunch for a good price!

An Unparalleled Symphony of British Gastronomic Excellence

As a esteemed member of the Royal Bartholomew Ascot Society of Fine Arts and Finer Food, I have had the distinct privilege of indulging in the crème de la crème of culinary experiences across the globe. From the opulent banquet halls of Versailles to the exotic spice markets of Marrakech, my palate has been refined by the world's most exquisite flavors. However, I must declare that my recent visit to Scallywags has left me utterly gobsmacked, for it is an establishment that transcends the mere notion of a restaurant and enters the realm of the sublime.

Upon arriving at Scallywags, one is immediately transported to a world where the grandeur of Britain's past is seamlessly interwoven with the comforts of the present. The entrance is flanked by towering replicas of the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles, setting the stage for the historical and cultural journey that awaits. As I stepped through the polished mahogany doors, I was greeted by a resplendent interior that paid homage to the finest aspects of British design: the walls adorned with William Morris wallpaper, the floors adorned with intricate Victorian tiles, and the ceilings adorned with ornate plasterwork that would make Christopher Wren himself swoon with delight.

The menu at Scallywags is nothing short of a magnum opus, a culinary love letter to the British Isles that spans the length and breadth of this great nation. I began my repast with the "Royal Ascot" starter, a delicate composition of Scottish smoked salmon, English cucumber, and Devonshire cream cheese, all nestled atop a bed of watercress and garnished with a sprinkling of edible gold leaf. The fish was as tender as a whispering breeze across the Highlands, and the combination of flavors was as harmonious as a Handel concerto.

For the main course, I was presented with the "Windsor Knot" roast beef, a magnificent cut of prime British beef, cooked to a perfect medium-rare and served with a medley of vegetables that were as vibrant as a Turner landscape. The pièce de résistance, however, was the Yorkshire pudding—a towering, golden monument to the art of pastry-making, which stood proudly beside the beef like a sentinel guarding the Crown Jewels. As I poured the rich, velvety gravy over the pudding, I could not help but feel a sense of patriotic pride swelling within my breast.

The dessert course was a veritable tour de force, a parade of sweet delights that paid tribute to the finest traditions of British confectionery. I indulged in the "Eton Mess," a whimsical concoction of crushed meringue, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream that was as delightful as a summer's day at Henley Regatta. The "Bakewell Tart" was a masterclass in pastry-making, with a buttery crust that crumbled beneath my fork and a filling that was as sweet and fragrant as a rose garden in full bloom.

But it is not merely the food that sets Scallywags apart from its contemporaries. The service is impeccable, with a staff that is as knowledgeable as they are attentive. Dressed in traditional British livery, they move with the grace and precision of a well-rehearsed ballet, anticipating one's every need and desire before it has even been uttered. The sommelier, a gentleman of considerable expertise, guided me through the extensive wine list with the skill of a seasoned navigator, steering me towards a vintage that complemented my meal perfectly.

And then, there is Richard, the proprietor of this extraordinary establishment. A true gentleman and a connoisseur of British cuisine, his passion for creating a dining experience that is both authentic and enjoyable is evident in every detail. From the carefully curated selection of British cheeses to the extensive collection of single malt whiskies, Richard's dedication to excellence is nothing short of inspiring.

As I sat back in my plush, velvet-upholstered chair, sipping a cup of the finest Earl Grey tea, I could not help but reflect on the sheer brilliance of Scallywags. Thank you...

Let me begin by saying I had my worst restaurant/café experience at this place. I suggested the place to a friend because it looks really cute. But it is as cute as the staff is rude. I first ordered a chai latte, which came in a very big bowl, full to the very top. Right after that a friend called to inform that she would join us, so we decided to move to another table where we could sit with the 3 of us. Upon getting up, I spilled some of my chai latte on the table. My friend told me she would fetch a towel, so I could clean up the mess, and I moved my drink to the other table. By then the waiter said: "Don't go around wetting all the tables". I got shocked by this response, yet I did not react, although I was pissed off by it. When we were already sitting down, I asked him for a towel, and he again said: "Yes, but don't go around wetting the tables". For me that was way over the line and I just turned to him and said he could not talk to a person that way, especially a client, and that I did not spill my chai latte on purpose (of course!!!). Instead of apologizing, he went on in discussing with me, saying that I was going around 'wetting tables'... The discussion escalated to the point when we were raising our voices against each other and I just said I would leave, because I would not spend my money in a place where they treat people like that. He said: "Your loss, not ours". We left without paying, after all, as I didn't even have the chance to touch my drink. The guy certainly had an attitude, which is not only unprofessional, as well as not nice in general. That was the first and last time I set foot on that place. From time to time you get lousy service in a café, but this was beyond lousy, it was just rude, offensive and arrogant. I think if people are not happy with themselves and with their work, they should try not to discount that on someone who has nothing to do with it. And if a person doesn't like people (because that was the impression I got from the man), he should for sure not be working in...
