Canton Cafe — Restaurant in Albert-Eden

Can't believe this was the first time I'd been here but was here for my colleagues birthday dinner and the food was just great! Fish, sizzling beef, tofu, chow mein, dim sum, sweet and sour pork and also ordered a chicken dish but can't recall which one specifically. The only dish I didn't like was the tofu but am not a fan of tofu in general anyway so this was not surprising for me. I had rice and of course BYO and I bought one of my favourite inexpensive wines (Brown Brother Dolcetto and Syrah). Can't quite recall how much the corkage is but think it is NZD3.00 per bottle. Our table was upstairs (I had no idea there was seating upstairs) and there's also tables on the balcony upstairs. I brought a cake and candles for the birthday boy. You need to book a table in advance unless you want to wait and there is a time limit if it is busy and it was on the Friday that I was there. The food here was very bland and lacking in flavour. We ordered the black pepper lamb which was undercooked, pork and green beans which was alright and the shrimp rice noodle which lacked any kind of flavouring. We also ordered the hot and spicy prawns which were neither hot or spicy. I asked one of the staff there if they'd perhaps got the order wrong and given me the salt and pepper prawns instead but was told that I did have the correct dish as she pointed at 1 of the 3 pieces of probably 1/20th of a chilli on the dish. I was also told I should have been clearer if I wanted it spicy as they apparently too many people complain about the 'hot and spicy' dish being spicy so they cater for those people exclusively?! I was very disappointed as this place is rated pretty highly on here. I'd suggest saving a considerable amount of money and heading to Dominion Road instead if you like food with some kind of flavour, but if bland is your jam...

Father's day dinner, very bad manner of putting plates on the table by waiters, waiters don't understand half of the things you say. My wife called the Boss lady to get some sauce, she took two steps and start serving another customer totally ignored her. We have to ask two waiters to get the sauce. And from the counter the BOSS lady, asks my wife if everything is okay. My wife was so upset and she left to sit in the car and told us to have the dinner or have it takeaway. I called the Boss lady regarding the issue what happened and I told her i am not happy with the service, she replied with anger. She took away all the food we ordered from the table and left it in the kitchen while we still sitting on the table, this BOSS lady was very rude. I would not recommend this...
