Update: 21 September 2025

Oh. My. Goodness. I'm about five minutes away from falling into a food coma!

This was one of the best South Indian Breakfast buffets I've had so far.

I visited Idly Sambar in Kingsland about 10 months ago and had their thali and it was good. This, on the other hand, is absolutely exceptional!

Pulling up to the restaurant I could already smell the food. I was the first one there, so that was great.

They have a live dosa making station. They also have the option of masala, chili, or butter dosa, where all other places only offer plain. I opted for potato stuffed (masala) dosa. Their aloo sabzi (potato curry) was very tasty, but their pongal was amazing! I had two servings. The sambar was a little bit thicker (how I like it), chock full of veggies, with just that little bit of heat and spice. Of course the vada and chutneys is one of my absolute favourite. Their idli was cloud like, and we were spoiled for choice with two fragrant rice options. The puri was not oily and soft. It was rounded off with rice kheer and probably the best masala chai I've ever had.

I will absolutely be back! Now for a nice long nap.

When people think 🤔 of South Indian food, the first (and only) thing that comes to mind is idly and sambar, maybe dosa.

Although the crowd favourite 😍 there is so much more diversity to South Indian cuisine 🍲 and this is what the owner of the restaurant "Idly Sambar" want to drive home. Providing access to a diverse range of good South Indian food.

The restaurant is situated in Kingsland, which is centrally located 👌 and a little bit outside of the city hubbub. Parking is limited and charged 🤬 Frankly I was not impresses by that at all!

It is a good sized venue with several industrial fans 🌬 to help keep the place cool.

I specifically went for the unlimited Andhra Thali. It is unlimited and served table side 👨‍🍳 I had to wait quite long for the first thali to come, about 20 minutes ⏳️ but the replacements came within a minute of my asking.

Usually I don't care much for rice 🍚 but this rice was fluffy and delicious. Their sambar was out of this world 🌎 and I had four bowls! The dal was tasty. I also liked their mixed veg curry 😋 and had two bowls. The halwa was velvety and melted in my mouth ✨️ It wasn't too sweet, which Indian desserts sometimes tend to be. The roti was a bit thicker and the tempura fried veg 🧅🫑 was a great accompaniment.

The bowls 🥣 are quite small. I guess it's to reduce wastage, and it doesn't matter much, since it is unlimited 👍

I wish 🤞 that the staff would have come and asked me 🗣 if I wanted anything more, instead of my having to try and grab their attention when they walked 🚶‍♂️ past. That would have elevated the experience.

It is simple food, simply made 😋 After eating you don't have that heavy feeling. You feel satiated and satisfied ❤️

A Culinary Delight:

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this South Indian Restaurant, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience that deserves high praise. From the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, setting the tone for an unforgettable dining experience.

The food at “Idly sambar” is nothing short of spectacular. Each dish is crafted with precision, presenting a symphony of flavours that delighted my taste buds. The menu offers a variety of options, each more tempting than the last. I had the pleasure of trying the Unlimited Buffet lunch which is just $20 for 16 items to try!!! Every item was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The freshness of the ingredients and the creativity of the chefs truly shine through in every bite.

The service at “Idly Sambar” is top-notch. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about ensuring that each guest has a memorable experience. From the prompt greeting to the attentive table service, every aspect of the service was impeccable. The waitstaff was well-versed in the menu and offered excellent recommendations, enhancing the overall dining experience.

The ambiance at “Idly Sambar” is both elegant and inviting. The tasteful decor, comfortable seating, and ambient lighting create a perfect setting for any occasion, whether it's a casual meal or a celebration with friends and family. The restaurant's attention to detail extends beyond the food and service, making it a truly immersive experience.

If you're looking for a restaurant that combines exceptional food quality, outstanding service, and a welcoming atmosphere, look no further than “Idly Sambar”. It's a place where every meal is an event to be savoured, and every visit leaves you eager to return. I highly recommend trying it for yourself—you won't be disappointed.

What an disaster i would say , Worst food of my life i have eaten . I chose unlimited buffet option on friday , there terms were no food wastage ,they told me if there is wastage they are going to charge double. But how can I eat the food which even doesn't have any taste i felt like I have been punished and have no options rather eating the food with every sip of water. Here is my analysis of this restaurant. We drove all the way from northshore to try out their unlimited buffet .Definitely not worth it at all! The dosas were soggy ,felt like made from ready to eat batter. The idli was sour because I think the batter was not fresh .The sambhar hardly had any vegetables. The chutneys tasted horrible. Samosas were full of oil and burnt. Their paneer quality was like eating a chewinggum, worst curries ever tasted .Their chapatis were so hard to chew man that was a mission !The only thing which i felt i could eat was medhu vada In a long time I have not left food as I would have had to pay double what a punishment , if I had an option of leaving food honestly I would have left pretty much everything I would score them in negatives if i had the option . Was definitely not worth the money I spent and eat all those food which i didnt needed to eat. They have deals like eat as many dosas as u can and charge 24.99 for it . Well to be honest I eat one with the sips of water, Sorry to say that, but I will never go to this restaurant...

This is a nice and decent sized south Indian restaurant conveniently located on New North Road in Kingsland. We went there on a friend's recommendation and enjoyed the weekend unlimited south Indian food buffet. It was worth the $20 price per person and $10 for kids. The items served were Sambhar, Dosa (made to order to minimise wastage), Vada, Idli, chutneys, rice, lemon rice, upma and sweet halwa along with some other items too. We enjoyed the meal a lot and all the items were freshly prepared along with great taste altogether. Dosas were being made to order on the spot, which ensured least wastage and one could get fresh and hot dosas. Tea was also served afterwards which was tasty and refreshing. The location is easily accessible and a few on street paid parking spots are available. If one can go a little far, free parking can be found easily on weekends and evenings. Overall, we had a great time there and highly recommend the place for meals and especially the unlimited buffet on weekends.

I visited Idly Sambar after hearing good things and seeing its high rating, and even recommended it to my friends. Unfortunately, the experience fell short. The service was disappointing—our table wasn’t cleaned properly, and the first dosa we received was burnt (though replaced after we pointed it out). Service overall was very slow. The sambar lacked the consistency of a traditional South Indian sambar, though the flavour wasn’t bad. The chutneys were decent as well. However, the biggest letdown was the pizza uttapam (photo attached), which we had ordered for takeaway—it turned out to be neither pizza nor uttapam, and was a real disappointment. I was embarrassed to have recommended this place to my friends, and it’s made me much more cautious about trusting online reviews. I hope the staff take this feedback seriously and work on improving both their service and consistency, but I don’t see myself returning anytime soon.
