Just want to preface this review by saying bakery is really good and worth a visit! Any comments/critiques are simply to distinguish it between very good or elite status.
I had a long black, almond croissant, beef pie and pretzel. Cost me $24 which is pretty reasonable I think.
The Almond croissant deserves the hype it gets in the other reviews. Very good stuff, and right up there with the best I've had. I particularly liked it was nice to handle and not really messy like some others.
The pie was also good. More of a rustic, home style pie I would say, rather than a traditional kiwi pie. Good flavour, but the pastry was not as flakey and crisp as I would like. It was also just warm rather than hot. I would have preferred hotter. The tomato sauce was a standout though! Homemade style with a nice acidity. I'm usually a watties purist but this was a nice change.
The pretzel was also fine but not the favourite I've ever had. I didn't enjoy the sesame seeds really and the dough was not quite the right texture for me if I was being pedantic.
The coffee was a good quality New Zealand coffee but nothing amazing/elite.
Also was happy to see the sauce and butter came in separate ramekins rather than single serve plastic.
Staff were super helpful and the atmosphere is great. Plenty of variety for seating. There is outside seating if it's a nice day.
They have a change table, although it's in the only toilet from what I could see.
Would give 4.5...
Read moreTucked away at 255 St Asaph Street in Christchurch, this place is quite a delightful spot that has quickly captured my heart on my first visit. As a coffee enthusiastic, I often find myself searching for that perfect blend of taste, atmosphere, and service, and Bohemian Bakery has them all.
I ordered a small Flatwhite with one sugar to go, and it was perfect. While it wasn't the strongest Flatwhite I've ever had, it was undoubtedly the softest and most balanced. The blend of coffee beans, milk, and sugar was spot on, creating a smooth and tasty experience.
The service was equally impressive as their tasty coffee. The lovely lady at the counter greeted me with a cheerful smile and politely asked for my name. Despite the shop being quite busy, the talented Asian barista delivered my coffee in no time, showcasing his skill in crafting great coffee at the speed.
Even though I was just grabbing a cup to go, the cozy and clean atmosphere of the bakery was notable. It's the kind of place that urge you to return with a laptop or a good book, to enjoy some quiet and quality "me" time.
In summary, Bohemian Bakery is a fantastic spot whether you're in a rush or looking to relax. With their superb coffee, friendly service, and cozy vibe, I call it a must visit for anyone in Christchurch. Five...
Read moreAbsolutely incredible little bakery and cafe. I have been a regular customer at their original Sumner location for many years now - making the trek out to Sumner regularly to get their bread and other baked goods. They are easily the best bakery in Christchurch; everything is done by hand, the correct way. Their sourdough loaves are to die for and their pies are insane! No trip is complete without a danish or croissant.
The selection of vegan options is a real treat. The vegan pies, croissants and danishes are all excellent.
Their new location is lovely, with a nice mezzanine with seating that overlooks the kitchen. Tastefully decorated and it is a relaxing atmosphere.
Highly recommend checking this place out, you...
