Very average food.more like a takeaway bar food wise..the dips were in tiny dishes so you ran out before the breads were finished..one of the dips being potato with mayo mixed in..i had the kebab..so called platter..lol..very small serve of salad ,bread and two skewers..came with chips?..so greek,no rice ,no tabouli,chips..lol..and even that was small serve.my friend ordered spanakopita which again was small and arrived straight out of the fridge!!!.ie cold. Deserts were minute ,the so called halwa was a light dusting over a dollop of so called homemade icecream.im sure it wasnt homemade.i had the baklava ..again tiny ,one layer ,and dry..such a crappy rip off I would never bother with this dump again.. obviously more interested in making money judging by content and portion sises.compared to a real greek restaurant such as the Mykonos was it is a sad joke...never again. Ive hear there is a decent greek on Sherborne st..i will try there next. Post script.. In their response.they accuse us of drinking alcohol from outside.i guess thats more convienient than answering to food critique.we were a party of mostly Japanese and had brought with us some traditional plum cordial.non alcoholic..this was discussed with the waiter who apeared to be indian and agreed on by him..to misrepresent this is a disgusting cheap shot..yet another reason not to bother with this place...spartan by name and funnily the meals are truly spartan ( in the frugal sense as well)..i suspect there is very little greek input in this place..as for his cheap shot comments on my other reviews,i mostly only review when i feel people should be warned .if a restaurant is good then normally that is its best advertisement.i have checked spartans other reviews and find similar comments to mine among them..lol.given these people spend more time critiquing their customer than upping their game i presume things can...

Spartan Greek Café and Restaurant on Colombo Street is a delightful gem in Christchurch. This cozy, family-run eatery offers an authentic Greek dining experience that transports you straight to the Mediterranean.

Ambience & Service The warm, inviting atmosphere, complemented by traditional Greek decor, sets the stage for a memorable meal. The staff’s attentive and friendly service enhances the overall experience, making you feel like part of the Spartan family.

Culinary Highlights Our dinner featured a selection of dishes that showcased the freshness and quality of the ingredients: • Greek Bruschetta: A delightful starter with fresh toppings on perfectly toasted bread. • Horiatiki Salad: Exquisitely fresh, with crisp vegetables and a tangy dressing that awakened the palate. • Spanakopita: A harmonious blend of feta cheese and spinach encased in flaky pastry. • Vegetarian Souvlaki: Flavorful and satisfying, offering a hearty option for vegetarians. • Zucchini Fritters: An absolute standout—crispy on the outside, tender inside, and bursting with flavor. • Baklava: A sweet finish to the meal, with layers of pastry and nuts soaked in syrup.

Overall Impression Spartan Greek Café and Restaurant delivers an exceptional dining experience with its authentic cuisine, welcoming atmosphere, and outstanding service. It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking genuine Greek flavors in...

Gorgeous food!!! Our waiter informed us straight away they had staff off sick so to bear with him as he was doing both the cooking and the serving. He was efficient, super lovely, attentive, and the FOOD...my goodness it was delectable. We started with four dips and pita, each dip more delicious than the last it was hard to choose a favourite. Next came the calamaris cooked to perfection in the lightest and crispiest batter. All served with divine tzatziki sauce that complemented the seafood perfectly. The classic spinach and cream cheese filo pastries came next - the pastry was hot, light and buttery, and filled with loads of spinach. It was creamy, savoury and oh so yum!! We ordered a prawn souvlaki, seafood plate, and vege moussaka for our mains. Please see the pics of our mains -we didn't get any photos of the starters/meze because it was too delicious to wait! All in all I would totally reccomend this restaurant and we are already planning on coming back again. We used first table too as this is available during lunch hours which I would recommend, but to be totally honest we would have been more than happy to have paid full price and then some for the service and food we received. Thank you Spartan, we hope you remain a local staple in chch city for many...

I saw this new restaurant last weekend and decided to try it this week together with my wife. We've been to Greece many times and love the Greek cuisine. So, our hopes and expectations were high. And Spartan delivered beautifully! The food is as close to authentic as you'll find anywhere outside of Greece. We went for the Meze style of eating, where you order many share plates and 'fill the table'. Everything we tried was tasty and fresh. Their recipes are definitely Greek and they use the right ingredients available in NZ to make it a feast. Greek restaurants are not just about the food... The drinks are just as important! Luckily they have some Greek wines (more are coming they assured us) and of course local wines which are very good. They also have a good selection of Ouzo which is very nice as an appetiser. The service was outstanding and the place looks really nice,

Absolutely delicious. One of the best meals I have had for a long time. Some of the most delicious and freshest Greek food I have ever had, and that's including the food I ate in Greece. We just came in to try some of the smaller menu items, but we will definitely be back as soon as possible to try the mains and dinner menu. We had Dolmades, some cheese wrapped in filo with honey and the pita and dips. The dolmades were perfect with a beautiful tzatziki to dip them in, the filo wrapped cheese and honey was spectacular, absolutely delicious. The pita and dips were brilliant. The humus was perfect, and the surprise standout was a potato based dip. Absolutely brilliant, I can not recommend more highly and am very much looking forward to trying the mains. I'd also strongly recommend trying the blood orange Greek soda

Stopped by for some lunch today and has such a delicious meal. We had the pita with three dips (you HAVE to try the skordalia, it's a potato dip and it was incredible), dolmades and we had the Mizithiropita (a delicious cheese filo drizzled in honey). I drank a very lovely blood orange soda which I recommend if you aren't drinking alcohol with your meal, not too sweet and great flavour. The service was so friendly and helpful and the food was soooo tasty. I think I'll be dreaming about the skordalia for a while... We will be back for dinner and with friends because we want to try everything!
