Garden Place Noodle Bar - Hamilton, NZ Pork & Chickpea Spicy Soup This weekend I popped across the ditch to visit our dearest lovely neighbours in New Zealand. Prior to getting drunk I always want to make sure I have enough noodles in my stomach to prevent any hangovers, I think that’s science? I’m not a scientist though so maybe don’t listen to me unless you’re Donald Trump or Scott Morrison then do listen to me as you have a knack of listening to the opinions of non scientists to make decisions. Well done. Anyway, Saturday I found myself in Hamilton - All the descriptions I had been told of Hamilton have been somewhat necessary ranging from, Hamilton is a ghost town, get in and get out to the most wild “Hamilton is the world’s capital of chlamydia” - I dunno have these people ever been to the Gold Coast during the months of November and December? Anyway, this instagram is about soup not STD’s and Geography so let’s talk about the soup. Garden Place is a hole in the wall with a chef that has finessed the art of noodle acrobatics and he has a University of Lanzhou Noodles certificate to prove it. After throwing about some dough and giving us some delicately created noodles in a sichuan spiced broth I was a very happy camper to see the bowl of my dreams placed before me. While at first I was disappointed in the lack of mince these thoughts were soon gone when I mixed together the hand pulled noodles, the deliciously aromatic and numbing broth and the vegetables that floated about in the bowl. Yum. The noodles were of perfect texture. I hoofed then down faster than you can say “is that hobbit town near here”. Hamilton may not have a clean STI rate but they do have some damn good noodles and those damn good noodles were being served right here, right now.

Food is great and pricing is some if the best. Love the portion sizing and taste is very good. Can see why it is so popular. Staff are attentive and easy going. The restaurant itself is a little small and stools are a little high to sit on but you can get by with those minor inconveniences. They also sell frozen dumplings if you prefer to takeaway some of their house-made dumplings back home.
Portion sizes are great regular can satisfy most people but if you’re extra hungry you can get a massive bowl (Large) and it will definitely satisfy you.
They have outdoor seating but limited to no coverage and no heating so it can get quite cold in the breeze and it’s somewhat exposed.
Parking can at most times be difficult to find unless you park in underground garden place parking, which costs, as well as street parking is very limited most days and comes at a cost besides the 2 HR free CBD...
Read moreWon’t be going back again. As a person with coeliac this is usually a good place for me to eat but tonight when I asked for my usual gluten free noodle order the worker was not communicating with me very well. I had checked multiple times that the noodles would be gluten free and he kept repeating that “yes all noodles are gluten free”. I didn’t think this was correct but I trusted him anyway as I had asked multiple times. After I had started eating, a different worker came over and told me that it was not gluten free. I am very upset by this as I am now at home and VERY sick. They did bring me another bowl with gluten free noodles but they should never have made the mistake in the first place as once again, I had checked...
