Incredible authentic tacos. Carnitas and Birria are the best you can find in Auckland by far - there’s a few great Mexican places in Auckland now and we thought we wouldn’t be able to find anything in NZ more authentic than we have before, but La Mexicana has done it. No compromise on authenticity and no nachos or burritos in sight which hopefully means they will stay authentic. The Birria consomé on the menu tonight was so freaking delicious I wish we could have bought a bucket. So far the only thing I think they can improve is service and consistency (friends got the wrong tacos but didn’t want to send them back cause it took so long to come out in the first place, and sometimes we get lots of salsa on the tacos, once we got none and sometimes only a squirt) But hopefully as they get busier they will hire more staff/maybe get a bigger restaurant and have faster service times :) Home made tortillas - delicious, hope one day they start selling them at the door! Horchata - pretty tasty, a bit watery though, same with the Tamarind drink. Would love to see what they could do with chicharrón ;) We are new...

The vegan picadillo was delicious, perfectly seasoned. The cherry on top was the tres leches cake, it was moist, sweet enough and decadent, also it's covered in cajeta (or dulce de leche/caramel). The portion was decent, one slice was just enough for two.
Vegan option of the day and the vegan picadillo are the reason I could revive the authentic taco experience (without the meat!).
The service and personal attention to customers is also very good. The background music was on point. Nice atmosphere and decoration.

Read moreas a Mexican still Cielito Lindo is the #1 authentic taco place for me. But here you have a good option right in the city and slightly more economical. The tortillas are small but really fresh and delicious, reminded me of the good taquerias back in Mexico City. But I felt that the rest was close but not quite flavorful in the end. Such a let down on the “hot sauces”, they are definitely missing that Mexican punch. I guess is more to target kiwis which in that case they are just fine. For me the barbacoa taco was the only good one to go for. The drinks were nice as well and...
