I visited Onemata with friends, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable dining experiences I’ve had in Auckland.
For starters, we ordered everything recommended by the resutaurant staff, and the highlight was definitely the Fish Crudo. Unlike similar dishes I’ve had elsewhere, there wasn’t even the slightest hint of fishiness. The Asian-inspired touch in the dressing and oil elevated the flavors beautifully! It was truly exceptional.
What impressed us even more was the wine service. I mentioned that I don’t enjoy sweet wines, and that I prefer something dry yet distinctive to pair well with the food......perhaps a little picky, I admit....... But the sommelier, a gentleman wearing a Japanese flag pin, introduced us to the perfect wines! He shared that he had worked at several five-star hotels around the world, which made perfect sense given his expertise. We were truly impressed by him.
Not only was his wine knowledge outstanding, but he also answered our questions about the food in great detail. For example, he explained that Onemata’s chefs regularly visit their partner farms to personally select the finest cuts of meat, which really showed the restaurant’s dedication to quality.
In the end, we ordered every dish and wine pairing he recommended, and each one was absolutely spot-on!!!
It was such a wonderful evening, and I will definitely return to Onemata. Highly recommended!
※One small comment I would add is that the meat was absolutely outstanding, so I would have appreciated being advised to taste the meat on its own first and then try it with the...

We opted for “Trust the Chef” menu which comprises of 4 courses - an entree, a snack, a seafood main, a meat main, then a dessert.
Each menu showed great use of Asian twist to bring out the flavor whilst showcasing the quality of ingredients.
The first course was a couple of oysters with cured and seasoned meat. A touch of spice goes very well with the oyster and paired with Champagne, it can’t be better.
Seafood main was pieces of trevally served in sashimi style. Asian spices - ones you would find in Thai cuisine - were used together along with coconut milk.
Eye fillet was delicate and a hint of smoke was delightful. Gravy and hummus paired well also.
We were given a piece of cheesecake as an appreciation for mother’s birthday. It was a pleasant surprise as we didn’t expect such service.
The waiters are very prompt although the restaurant was very busy. Sommelier was very helpful also.
Overall, it was a great experience. With open kitchen, it makes the experience even more interesting. I would definitely recommend to try the “Trust the Chef” menu if you are unsure of...

We ordered 5 dishes: eggplant: It was very good. Probably best dish in this meal. We really like the coating combination with the eggplant. Wish there was more than 3 pieces on the plate. Sweet & Sour crispy fish: It was very good. A common dish in Chinese restaurants, but over priced here. +Chicken: It was half a chicken. It was ok. +Pistachio dessert: It was ok. +Chocolate dessert: It was ok.
We felt the manager / waiter was a bit imposing in the beginning trying to get us to order a entree. We said we wanted the fish crudos, then he made it clear it wasn't a Entree and he pointed at the entree side and asked if we wanted to order something from there. We said No, we would like the fish crudo please. Perhaps there was some miscommunication there, we never got the fish crudos... The waiters were very attentive in the beginning, but towards the end they seemed to have forgotten about us. After our meal we waited 30min to get the dessert menu.
Food was good quality. It was a good deal, but we are not in a...
