The Queen’s Ferry is one of Auckland’s oldest pubs (est. 1865), and it quickly became a highlight of our trip. I first visited alone one evening and tried two iconic New Zealand APAs. The Panhead Supercharger APA was crisp, golden, and refreshing, with citrus and pine notes—a bold but easy-drinking beer from one of NZ’s most famous craft breweries. The McLeod’s 802 APA (#64) was richer and hazier, with tropical fruit and malt sweetness, a limited-release brew that felt both unique and authentic. Sitting under warm lights, surrounded by vintage portraits and old maps, it was the perfect way to unwind.
The next night, I returned with my family. This time we chose something lighter: a strawberry soda, bruschetta with tomato and mango, and baked brie with honey and toasted bread. Sharing food led to a fun chat about New Zealand honey—especially Manuka Honey, famous worldwide for its UMF grading and natural antibacterial qualities. Tasting warm bread with melted cheese and honey felt simple yet unforgettable, a perfect mix of sweet and savory.
With its history, character, and great drinks, The Queen’s Ferry is more than just a bar—it’s an experience. Highly recommended for both beer lovers...
Read moreThe Queen’s Ferry in Auckland might have a run of the mill pub vibe with its easy listening classics and country hits, but don’t let that put you off.
The food makes up for it and packs a surprising punch. Leaning more upmarket with gastro pub vibes and a menu that will leave you wanting more, from mouth watering, succulent pork belly that melts in your mouth to delicate bone marrow, pâté and beef tartare, and the crispiest hand cut fries I’ve ever eaten.
This is as unpretentious as you get, but the food far surpasses many popular restaurants and eateries in Wellington where I’m from. Added to that, it’s reasonably priced but could easily cost more in terms of the quality.
The owners/staff are also super attentive and create a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels inclusive.
I hear they’re refurbishing in the months to come. I’m not a pub goer but I’ll definitely be back on my next visit...
Read moreNice location friendly staff and good selection of drinks if they have what you want. Shame there is no atmosphere. Well maybe it is for the locals but not when yo are visiting. Was very friendly welcome and the listened for the first round. After that it was a little more hard-work. If you ordering a lager or beer you have an option of glass or pint I like a pint and not a glass. The first round they listened next two rounds they didn’t and got glasses and no pints. Think it’s just a local thing they drink by the glass and not the pint as we do in the UK. Not sure I would rush back only here for a month and know I won’t be back. If you visiting give a miss if you a local you know...
