OOMA Rockwell delivers a very disappointing food experience that fails to meet even basic expectations for Japanese cuisine. The restaurant struggles with fundamental flavor development and execution across nearly every dish.
The gyoza was bland and tasteless, lacking the savory pork filling and proper pan-frying technique that should make these dumplings a reliable appetizer choice. The absence of seasoning and authentic flavors suggested either poor ingredient quality or inadequate preparation.
The aburi mix platter was equally lackluster, failing to showcase the flame-seared technique that should define aburi preparations. The selection lacked the smoky flavors and quality fish that make aburi sushi a premium offering worth ordering.
The cheesy katsudon provided the meal's only redeeming moment, proving decent with good taste that demonstrated the kitchen's potential when they focus on comfort food combinations. This fusion approach worked better than their attempts at traditional Japanese preparations.
The beef udon was so terrible that I didn't even finish it, representing a complete failure in what should be a restaurant staple. Poor broth quality, overcooked noodles, or inadequate beef preparation made this dish inedible rather than comforting.
Even dessert disappointed - the chocolate gyoza was not worth the calories, suggesting that the kitchen's problems extend beyond savory preparations into their sweet offerings as well.
OOMA Rockwell consistently fails to deliver authentic Japanese flavors or even satisfying fusion alternatives, making it a restaurant to avoid when seeking quality Japanese cuisine in the Rockwell area. Additionally, the dining area was busy, crowded, and noisy. Staff were not attentive despite how many of them were...
Read moreDined here last Saturday. My friend hyped this place up, but it was an underwhelming experience.
We were the first customers to be seated (got here at around 10:30 am) and when we ordered there were only 2 other tables. Called the attention of 3 different staff (including the manager!) but we had to wait more than 5 minutes for someone to take our orders. I was puzzled why we were being ignored as the staff seemed to just be walking back and forth the premises not doing anything.
Food is okay. I ordered the gyudon. I like the sweet smoked meat they added aside from the beef gyudon itself. It does get "nakakaumay" at the end though. Manager approached us and offered complimentary tea so my mother said yes. We're about to finish our orders and the tea hasn't arrived. We had to ask for a follow-up with one of the staff—only then was my mother served the tea.
To add to this terrible experience so far, trying to get the bill was difficult as trying to order. Had to call several staff and wait for several minutes before someone actually noticed us.
Food is okay, but I wouldn't recommend going to this establishment due to the horrible customer service. Can't imagine how bad the service is...
Read moreService: Their staff are very friendly and helpful. However, I was just quite mad when they ask if they can remove some of the serving plates. I don't mind it on a normal circumstance, it will actually help us eat on a cleaner table but one of the plates they asked if can be removed still have food on it and we are still eating. But other than the serving plate issue, I'm happy with the serving.
Waiting time: Well, it's acceptable. We ate there on a peak hour and we did not wait that long for our food to be seeved considering the number of their customers during that time.
Food: They got me with their gyoza. I don't typically eat gyoza. But they made me eat gyoza more than my usual gyoza taste test. Just wow!
Amenities: Their unisex restroom is clean. However, if you're a woman who wants to refresh before eating, you might prefer doing it somewhere else. They don't have enough space in there wash area for your bag or kit.
Note: You might prefer requesting a sit on the 1st floor. 2nd flr seems suffocating during peak hours due to small space...
