As someone who genuinely enjoys Chinese cuisine, I had high hopes returning to Modern Shanghai for a second try, hoping the food had improved since my last visit. Unfortunately, it was still a disappointment.
If you rarely eat at Chinese restaurants, you might find the dishes flavorful. But for seasoned Chinese food lovers, it falls flat.
Salt and Pepper Squid – Chewy texture, lacking the essential pepper kick. It was underwhelming and didn’t live up to its name.
Garlic Broccoli – Supposedly in oyster sauce, but there was no hint of oyster sauce at all.
Yang Chow Fried Rice – Tasted and looked pre-cooked. They simply added toppings as garnish and labeled it as Yang Chow. Not authentic in taste or preparation.
General Food Quality – Everything feels pre-prepared. There’s a noticeable lack of freshness and depth in flavor that one expects from a Chinese restaurant.
Service: I have to give credit where it’s due – the staff were excellent and attentive throughout the meal.
However, when it comes to food, other Chinese restaurants like Hap Chan or North Park deliver far better quality and authenticity. This was my second time trying Modern Shanghai, giving it the benefit of the doubt, but sadly it didn’t live up to expectations.
Final Verdict: Not recommended for those looking for authentic and flavorful Chinese cuisine. Modern Shanghai needs serious improvement if it wants to stand out among seasoned...
Read moreThe food Tasted great but there are two reasons as to why i rated it only 2 stars.
Food service: The food service is awful. It took us over 1 hour and 30 minutes before we can even get MOST of our orders, they werent giving us updates and we had to remind them 3 times and even my younger sister who is currently 4 years old had to remind them that she was hungry and she was waiting for her noodles. Lacking in awareness, slow on the out-take, and unfair service. They weren't serving us water or whatsoever.
Hotpot issue: They gave us the butane and pot itself but they didnt give us the INGREDIENTS needed to cook our hotpot. Thus, we werent able to enjoy the making of the hotpot due to the lack of awareness of the service provided. That wasnt all, they had to cook it for us because they forgot despite my family reminding them 3 times that we were waiting for them to give the ingredients. Only after 1 hour (when we were done eating) were they able to give to us the hotpot (that they cooked). Hoping to other consumers that they wouldnt go through this experience.
Despite my family's complains, the food tasted great and we enjoyed it but it wouldve tasted even better if they gave everything rather than just giving them 1 by 1 and making us wait for 15 minutes per dish and the hotpot for a...
Read moreHad a very unpleasant experience at this place. At first, I admired their staff's proactive approach when they gave me a heads up that my order would take half an hour to serve, which I initially felt was too long for very simple stir fry dishes. Still, I accepted it nonetheless and just see if the food would redeem the experience while I read up on my book. Thirty mins. had passed and I followed up several times with a number of their staff, continuing my reading in between until I suddenly realized that they've hit the hour mark since their promise. I gave up and asked for my bill consisting of what should have just been a solitary bottle of mineral water. Bill came in with all food items I ordered but had never arrived. I asked them to take out everything and just leave the water in the bill. Makes you wonder what's so "Modern" in their approach...
