Took us a while to try Kuya J again after a so-so experience in another Kuya J branch. It's a good thing we tried again because our dining experience in Kuya J SM Novaliches is a pleasant surprise.
We were supposed to eat in another restaurant beside Kuya J, but yet again, the waiting line is long, so we decided to go with Kuya J as it's not full. We were immediately seated.
Pros: There is no waiting line. Extensive menu of favorite Filipino dishes. It was one of the best halo-halo we had and at a very fair price, too. Highly recommended the cheesy ube halo halo espesyal for the same price at P135 but with surprise dollop of cheese inside the ube. The wash area is always a plus point in this kind of restaurant where kids can get messy eating. Everything tasted delicious. All the sides are ok, especially the fish cracker / kropek. We ordered the Kuya J Bulalo (highly recommended), Pochero Bulalo Tagalog (two thumbs up), and Grilled Pork Belly, and they are all tastys and memorable. Nice minimalist interior but modern looking. My wife loves the porcelain wares used. It's more unique and sophisticated compared to regular serving plates.
Cons: Above average price. Small servings of rice, pochero, and bulalo in comparison to other restaurants for the same price. Some food took a while to be served more so if they are fully booked. The pork belly was a little tough or "makunat," but it was the right flavor. The fried green veggie (might be crispy kangkong) is not crispy at all. In fact, it was malamya already, but it was delicious.
Tip: Order the solo meals, which already include rice, iced tea, and 3 set sides for only an additional P50 if you buy it ala carte.
EDIT: We came back January 2025 and tried their crispy pata bundle with squid sisig, chopsuey, and leche flan good for 4 to 5 pax worth P1800+.The crispy pata was truly crispy, the sisig was tasty, the chopsuey was delicious and the leche Flan is thick and creamy. Despite this, I'm not sure it's...

Read moreIt was supposedly a perfect Sunday for our family to bond together until we walk in to this restaurant ( Kuya J's Sm fairview annex yeah it's specific), 3/4 of the menu was not available (considering that it is a weekend lunchtime) so we ended up ordering their "new" Ube halo halo which supposed to have leche flan on top but since they ran out of stock changed it into langka instead. So for the second time my dad noded his head and says okay about it thinking that all this inconvenience will stop there but little did he knew that we're gonna wait for 1 hour just for 7 orders of that ube halohalo with langka as its only ingredient andddd on a take-out plastic cup! So unsatisfying, so unprofessional, so not ideal for a weekend eat-out for family. Even the lady on the table next to us wrote a complaint on a piece of paper on her frustration that it will get to the person who manages the place. She even looked at my mother and smirked both agreeing with the same unacceptable experience. So if you want to ruin your Sunday family day...i will...
