Beware of Takeout: A Disappointing Experience with High-End Delivery Our history with the various Avillez establishments in Lisbon is complicated; a bad experience at Belcanto some time ago has meant we rarely frequent them, though occasional visits to his more casual spots have yielded decent, if not spectacular, meals. This time, to sidestep the crowded streets of Cascais, we opted to order in via Uber Eats. The result was, to put it mildly, a disaster. The first warning sign was the Caesar Salad with chicken. For an item that should be straightforward, it failed on every front. The base consisted of tired Roman lettuce, the chicken was pale and lacked any discernible searing or seasoning, and while there were traces of dressing, the customary Parmesan was entirely absent. It felt like a dish thrown together with zero care for quality or presentation, utterly divorced from the standards one expects from a chef of this caliber. The second dish, a grilled corvina, was equally poorly executed and arrived cold. Between the lack of heat and the sloppy preparation, the entire meal was almost inedible. What truly adds insult to injury is the pricing. The take-out price for these substandard dishes was, inexplicably, higher than the cost listed on the restaurant's physical menu. To pay elevated prices for food that is significantly worse than a decent cantina—delivered cold, poorly dressed, and incomplete—is unacceptable. Judging solely on the quality and value of this take-out service, I would strongly recommend diners make a detour away from these establishments. While the dine-in experience might be acceptable, the quality control for delivery fails so miserably that it risks tarnishing the...
Read moreThe restaurant is overrated in my view, barely 3 stars, here is why: The good: The place is very well made, stylish and good design with a nice bar in the entrance very good food selection from starter to main dish, wine list etc everything with a nice local twist but also international the waiters do speak English as mentioned by others so if that’s important for you there you go (for us it was awkward since we both speak Portuguese but the waiters kept answering in English)
The bad: the food was very very salty. We had 4 starters and one main dish, everything was over salted the waiters are way below par, we got offered the couvert a second time when we already had one and were well into the meal, we ordered two glasses of wine and got the full bottle instead, our waiter couldn’t recommend a plate to us, and lastly it took a lifetime to pay - so we ended up putting cash on the table and left. the place is very loud the welcome was weird, we had a reservation but instead of asking for a name we were just told to sit and wait
Overall: overpriced for the total experience, you get much better in local restaurants with heart and soul. We...
Read moreToday my wife and I had lunch at Cantinho do Avillez, our first time to eat at this fine Cascais restaurant. I had the duck with red curry and rice and Carolyn had the Mushroom Risotto with Basil. For dessert we had the chocolate cake with strawberry sorbet and the Orange Swiss roll. And of course a fine cup of coffee. The restaurant has an three areas to be seated. Tables are located outside in front of the restaurant. There were tables inside the restaurant and a delightful well-lighted and comfortably furnished garden or atrium area. We choose to be seated in the garden area. We would highly recommend the restaurant. While the restaurant deserves five stars I do have one recommendation. As we completed our fine meal a gentleman nearby lit up a cigarette which surprised and disappointed us. I spoke to the smoker and to a man who appeared to be one of the restaurant manager who just shrugged his shoulders. If the management feels it must accommodate those who must smoke please restrict them to the front-outside seating area. Don't spoil the wonderful eating experience by allowing them to smoke in the...
