Inaugurated in 1923, this cafe-restaurant that celebrates the history of Coimbra occupies the old parish church of Saint John of the Cross. It was built in 1539. The Café Santa Cruz is located next to the church of the same name, in front of the square Oito de Maio. Do not be surprised if here, at dusk, you come across poetic presentations or reading sessions. The Café has a rich cultural agenda, with musical presentations, artistic interventions and educational activities aimed at the general public. In addition to contemplating its architecture or simply staying on its esplanade to watch the passers-by in the daily life of the city, visitors can order the crúzios - a popular regional sweet of monastic origin that takes its name from the members of the Order of the Holy Cross. If you're curious about what's in the region, take a look at the free audio guide at this link: https://izi.travel/en/c125-coimbra/en I hope you enjoy your time in Coimbra!

This cafe was one of the highlights of my trip to Portugal. We stayed at an airbnb and picked up our keys from this cafe when we arrived in Coimbra. We decided to have breakfast here the next day and it was absolutely amazing! The food, the pastries, coffee, service all top tier. We were checking out of our airbnb early that morning and didn't want to carry our bags all day, so the waiter Luis offered to ask his manager to take care of the bags for the day. They were more than happy to help us, and really Luis was such a wonderful waiter! I still remember this place by his name. This was truly a gem in my Portugal experience.

I don't understand how that can be a 4.4 as of 2024.08.28. All the savoury food is composed of processed toast, buns and so called "croissant" which are actually some thick and heavy brioche in the shape of a croissant. The ham in your sandwich is paper leaf, The cappuccino feels watery. Attract people with stunning old facilties right by the church, serve them disgraceful "food", I call that a tourist trap, and we got trapped. The waiter forgot our pastéis de nata, but I'm sure we did not miss out. Run!

This is a nice cafe. We stopped there after a long road trip. The menue is full of options. We had a croissant with ham and chess and a toast sandwich with green tea. I got a tea bag for the green tea which was a turn off. But other goodies were good enough for me to give them 4. Inside the restaurant is quite interesting too and worth a visit. When we were there (on a Sunday), there was supposed to be Fado performance at 6pm. I'm not sure if it is a common in that stop. I hope you enjoy your stay there.

Surprisingly good service. All the people behind the counter were very friendly and patient. I went there twice. First time I tried their famous almond pastry (not bad!) And I returned later that day at 6pm since they had the Fado show. Free admissions. We ordered some tea and watched the Fado show which lasted about 45-min. Since it was free we decided to buy their CD for €15. The show was really good. Highly recommend!

Dating back to 1923 this cafe is situated in part of the original Church of Santa Cruz. The architecture is impressive and a visit is highly recommended.Unlike the Majestic in Porto, for example, this is not a tourist trap but a genuine cafe serving snacks and great coffee. I had not visited here since 2009 but am glad to say it retains its place as my most favorite cafe in Coimbra.
