Pastelaria Visconde is one of those traditional pastry shops in Coimbra where you can truly taste the soul of Portuguese sweets. It’s not fancy or modern – it’s authentic, local, and filled with trays of pastries that immediately catch your eye as you walk in.
The variety is impressive: from flaky, golden pastries to small cakes, biscuits, and the classics filled with rich egg-based cream. Everything looks fresh and inviting, displayed in long glass counters that tempt you to try more than one.
I had one of their specialties filled with doce de ovos (sweet egg yolk cream), lightly dusted with powdered sugar. The outside was soft and slightly chewy, the inside bright orange, rich, and sweet in that unmistakably Portuguese way. It’s the kind of pastry that feels homemade and traditional, full of flavor and history. Perfect with a strong coffee.
Prices are very low, especially compared to the quality and quantity. For just a few euros, you can enjoy pastries that would cost much more in tourist-heavy areas. It’s the kind of place locals come to regularly, and you can feel that authenticity.
The staff are quick and efficient, making sure you’re served fast even when the place gets busy. Don’t expect luxury service – it’s a busy pastelaria – but do expect efficiency and friendliness.
If you want to experience a true Portuguese pastry shop in Coimbra, Pastelaria Visconde is a must. Come hungry, try different sweets, and enjoy a taste of tradition at very...
Read moreLooking different means worse service! I have been eyeing this place for a while now and finally decided to give it a go. I sat inside and awaited for some service. I wanted to see the menu and order some lunch. The 2 men working walked passed me several times, looked at me and continued on their day. I thought maybe I should order at the counter or maybe I upset them. I couldn't be sure. Eventually a woman came over. She was very polite. She took my order and both men served me. One brought my drink. He was semi polite. The smaller angrier looking man brought me food. He said nothing to me. I was polite, he refused to acknowledge me. While enjoying my meal many people came and sat down, all promptly served by either of the 2 men. Both smiling and making jokes with the other customers. I look different because I look like a tourist. I was treated differently. Looking different lead to worse service. If you don't like tourists, don't work in the main tourist area in Coimbra. Its very simple. Anyway, the food was good but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I was having a good day until I came here. I see the owner responds to reviews which...
Read moreI have been to Pastelaria Visconde many times, and I can confidently say it's the best pastry shop! This place offers the perfect blend of dining options, fresh bread, and a variety of incredible desserts. For dinner, the meals are not only delicious but also generously portioned and all at unbeatable prices. I recently tried the ribs, which were served with crispy fries, fresh vegetables, and an amazing risotto, all for just €7! You simply cannot find such value anywhere else. I highly recommend the bacalhau espiritual and the bacalhau a casa, served with vegetables and fries. Now, let’s talk about the desserts, pure heaven! Every single one is amazing, with cakes in a variety of flavors that will leave you spoiled for choice. My personal favorites are the caramel cake, the oreo cake, and the raspberry topped cake. They are some of the best cakes I have ever tasted, large portions and only €2.50 each. You can't beat that. The croissant here is also gigantic and very affordable. Pair it with a coffee, which...
