A Confeitaria [no.mercado] — Restaurant in Funchal

A little diamond in the center of the colourful fish & farmers market - Funchal, that can get rather busy during summer and cruise ship tours about. So timing is vital.

If your breakfast brunch consist of an espresso 'bika' and a small crispy warm custard cream pastry 'pastei de nata' (Portuguese centuries old Monk receipe) sprinkled with Cinnamon, well then, welcome to my breakfast world.

And boy, oh boy, did they hit it spot on & get the 'WOW' factor from me. A word reserved only for & when I feel the wow factor, which is rare nowadays.I asked myself, how much WARMER CRISPY & FRESHER can it get? And after some deep though -2 seconds later, I came to the conclusion that I have to go back for another try, try, try.

Now, some of you must be thinking: surely they must serve other beverages, pastries, hot sandwich and cakes. Well, yes they do & in fact it's at the counter or fridge covered by a clear armour plated glass -screaming to be eaten or ravagely taken home.

But that, I will leave to your discretion & just in case you want to take a few custard cream pastries home, 'guess what?', they so happened to have the cutest boxes too. Your call.

This coffee shop in Mercado do Lavradores is cute, offering specialty coffee and Portuguese pastries. But the guy who took my order thought it was hilarious to mock my accent with the cashier. When I called them out, she said they were "making a joke" of my portuñol (her words). Apparently, my attempt at pronouncing "qeijada" was funny to them (I was just trying to be polite by ordering in Portuguese). Yeah, not coming back... Plenty of other spots in Madeira where they actually respect their customers and...

So poor service! Only one girl with glasses from Brazil was outstanding in service - but yesterday and I went today again just to see if is better and again no welcome, leaving us standing and leaving without asking what we need - what a disappointment….
