We visited A Bica restaurant while in Madeira because one of the locals suggested it. Following google maps, we passed the restaurant twice, it is a very small door and we totally missed it so keep an eye out. It was a gorgeous day and this was our first day in Madeira so I was kinda disappointed that we were walking downstairs and were not headed to a patio outdoor somewhere. Entering the restaurant it felt like you were in your grandmothers basement. Cute, cozy with antique decor and furniture. The staff were very tentative and came to greet us immediately and we asked tons of questions and they were very helpful. I was extremely happy when I saw that the menu had a great selection of authentic Portuguese food with many starters, fish and meats to choose from. We were a party of four and we were all very satisfied with the taste and the quantity of the food provide. We had the bacalao with peppers onions and olives which was incredibly tasty and such a large portion could’ve been shared by two people. My husband (Who is very iffy with eating fish) had the fried fish and he loved it. This was also a very good portion. All the entrees we ordered came with rice, potatoes and vegetables. The food was fantastic!!!! we were extremely satisfied and happy with our selection for our first meal in Portugal!!!

During our one-day visit to the town, we chose this restaurant among many options, and we were not disappointed! A bica is an absolute must-visit if you want to try amazing Madeiran food! Starters We started with limpets and bolo do caco. The limpets arrived on a hot pan, still sizzling – what a fabulous experience! They were incredibly tasty: soft, juicy, and perfectly salty. Simply amazing! Main Courses For the main course, we ordered squid and black scabbardfish with banana. The banana fish was an absolute discovery – I have never tried fish so juicy and soft; it literally melted in my mouth, complemented perfectly by the mango sauce and banana. The squid was equally impressive. Mains are served with great selection of sides ! The service was lovely, and the atmosphere was delightful. This place left such a strong impression that I hope to visit again in the future. Highly recommend! If you have the chance, don't miss out on this exceptional dining experience. The restaurant is easy to overlook, and the indoor space might not seem very appealing when the weather is nice and you want to sit on a terrace. However, don't miss out on the opportunity for a fantastic meal.

Food wasn't good. Service was bad and it was unbearably hot in the place. No idea how this place got so good ratings. We were 3 people who came for dinner because it came recommended. When we entered we immediately felt the heat, but chose to stay anyway. They have no air conditioning, only a few fans placed in the corners. We ordered 3 different meals with the waitress who seemed annoyed by everything, i ordered a medium T-bone steak. When i got it it was raw and i had to send it back. When i got it the 2nd time it was better) My friend ordered grilled porc chops but stopped halfway because she also had some raw meat (which was confirmed by the waiter) One of us ordered an orange juice but we had to request ice cubes separately afterwards because it was warm. The last person ordered the scabbard fried fish which was ok, but not amazing. In the end none of us were really satisfied, but to different degrees. When we had to pay it was a different waitress who was very nice. There were some issues with the machine, but she was super cool about it.

I’d read reviews and heard good things, though I had reservations already based upon pictures. However, my partner and I thought we’d check it out and were amazed that there was a queue all the way down the stairs and onto the street around 8pm! It must be good, we thought. We came back earlier the following night and unfortunately, were very underwhelmed. The food was ok. Nothing special, nothing bad. The portion sizes are good and it’s cheap, but frankly, it reminded me of school dinner/cafeteria food. The same basic salad served for each dish, rather bland rice and chips, and the worst glass of wine I’ve had in both Madeira and Lisbon. Service was very quick, but we were told to sit at any small table when we entered, to then be told ‘no’ to two of the three tables that were set up for two? Very odd. You also need to pay at the bar rather than at your table. Nothing necessarily bad, but underwhelming and I don’t understand all the highly positive reviews. Far better places to eat on the island.

Our local guide recommended this restaurant and especially recommended to try the fish with banana. We arrived and the restaurant was full. We waited only minutes for a table. The restaurant is small but the tables were being served in a timely manner. We tried the black scabbardfish with banana and the mixed grill. The fish was incredible! The fish filet is mild, flaky and seasoned with a light batter then topped with a sweet warm banana and covered in a light sweet/savory sauce. This was our first meal on the island and we have been ordering this dish at every restaurant. It’s a must try and the national dish of the Madeira island. This restaurant has the best one so far. Our entree came with 4 generous portions of fries, zucchini, potatoes and rice. We felt like we had found a hidden gem eating here. The mixed grill was good but the fish was the star. The staff speak many languages and the menu is printed in a few languages as well.

I realised after I had left the restaurant that it cost €3.00 more than I was expecting. It turns out this was because of the garlic bread which I didn't really want, but was cajoled into having. When the waiter asked the first time if I wanted garlic bread, I said no. But after I gave my order he asked again, in a way as if to say I would be silly to turn it down. But at €3 I think the reverse would be true. Something like that would usually be free, so if it cost, he should have said so and how much it was, or how else can I decide if I want it? Most peculiarly, I wasn't given a printed bill (I've never not been given a printed bill in a restaurant before) - was this so I wouldn't realise I had been charged for the bread? Also, I have never felt so rushed in a restaurant in my life. I was asked if I had finished when I still had food on my plate and was asked to go to the till to pay the bill pretty much as soon as I had finished.
