We wanted with my fiance celebrate a birthday at Madeira and therefore we chose the Hotel do Carmo in the main city of Funchal. And that was the best decision we could ever had! The hotel was super nice, located in the walking distance to the ocean, Marina and as well to the main shopping centre with all the little bakeries. As we had a vacation during the COVID situation and the shops were closing at 6 PM, we had the grocery store right behind the hotel, about 5 minutes walking, which was super handy and therefore we could enjoy our trip around the island longer. The rooms are not new, however very clean and tidy, the housekeeping did great job. What we liked the most about our room was the wonderful terace, where we spent almost every evening and enjoyed the ocean and mountain view at the same time! There was also a terace and the hotel swimming pool on the upper floor, where we could enjoy the sunsets with our newly favourites Brisa nad Coral beverages! Last but not least, the reception staff was amazing! We had a great exeprience even before our arrival, as they booked us an airport transfer, which was great and very punctual, and then we felt more than welcome even at almost 3 AM, when we arrived at the hotel. The front desk agent Tania was exceptional, she was always there for us, whenever we asked for help. She recommended us a few options to choose from the car rental companies (and it was great!), helped us with the early breakfast because of the early flight back home and as well recommended and booked us on the COVID test we needed, which was super close and therefore very conveninent. Once again, we would like to thank a lot all the Hotel do Carmo staff for a great experience, their lovely hospitality and for making our vacation so special. We will definitely return back in the future and recommend your hotel to...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed here in December. The hotel is good value for the price and although the street where the hotel is situated is a bit run down, the location to all Funchal's amenities makes up for that.
Our room was small but clean and functional. The water pressure in the shower was great and there was always plenty of hot water. The bed was comfortable but I was surprised that there were no mattress or pillow protectors! Also, the pillows were very lumpy.
Breakfast became very boring after a few days (we were there for a week). It never varied from overcooked scrambled eggs, cold cocktail sausages with mushrooms, cold greasy bacon and hard boiled eggs. There was a good selection of bread and rolls and processed meats and cheese, and of course yoghurt, fruit and 3 cereals. We got enough to keep us going but every morning we hoped there would be a change to the offering. There is a drinks machine for hot drinks. It needed cleaned out as no matter how many times I pressed the hot water for my tea, I got a plop of coffee. The lady in the restaurant told me it was normal. I don't think after four unsuccessful atempts that it is normal. The lovely young Nepalese man gave me a cup of boiled water from the kitchen.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and can honestly say I've never experienced such lovely...
Read moreI think the only place to start with this review is the receptionists…. The ladies on reception are the most welcoming and friendly people. They are more than happy to help with anything. As soon as we got to the hotel we were greeted with a warm welcome. They were also very knowledgeable about the area. |The room was perfect with a balcony and large wardrobe. The beds were really comfortable too. We only spent 3 nights here but every day the rooms were cleaned (and tidied) with fresh towels. |Breakfast was fresh & tasty every morning woth a great selection for every taste. |All areas ofvthe hotel were kept spotless clean at all times. |The roof terrace with chairs, lounges and pool was perfect for sunny days! |The hotel is very close to the city centre within a few minutes walk of all the top attractions. Although it is close it was still quiet on an evening as it is on a little side/back street.|We mentioned upon booking in that it was our first time in Funchal and we were here celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. 2 days later on the date of our anniversary the staff left a bottle of fizz in our room with a beautiful card. We were so overwhelmed that they had listened and remembered. It was so thoughtful.|I cannot recommend this hotel enough and when we return to Funchal i wouldn’t book anywhere...
