Stop what you’re doing and eat here. Despite it being early on in our trip, I can easily say this is the best meal I’ve had. Firstly, the service is warm, genial and welcoming. Secondly in terms of options, there are more than enough without it being comical and excessive to the point you know it’s not all going to be good. As for what to eat, go local with your choices and specifically have the scabbard fillet with banana in a passion fruit sauce. It’s perfectly cooked and is accompanied by sautéed veggies and roasted potatoes. It tastes homemade in the best possible way in that the focus is the flavour of without any hint of prententiousness. If you’re a vegetarian, don’t worry they have a whole chalkboard’s worth of options for you. My husband had the vegetarian lasagne and he genuinely enjoyed it and claimed (and I tested it myself also so I too can attest) that it perfectly delicious. As if we weren’t sufficiently satiated by our respective meals and garlic bread, we sampled the cheesecake simply because we were so impressed by what we had just eaten that we were open to being further impressed. Let me just say, it did not disappoint. It was creamy but fluffy and topped with a delightful passion fruit sauce that rounded out its rich flavour. So yeah, stop what you’re doing and eat here because what else could be more important.

Very friendly and fast service. They just forgot to bring my starter breads, but the main course came so quicky that I was ok without. I was able to switch potatoes to rice from the food, which I I prefer as flexible service. Espada fish was tasty, only little bit too salty. White wine by class was not very good compared to other house wines I’ve drinked at Madeira. They served Madeira wine on the house as dessert, which was nice.

Wow, just wow. We came back here after a great first trip and now the food is still the same, wonderful and full of flavour. I highly recommend the calamari starter because it's not only very well made, it's a local food. If we do return to Madeira again, this is where we will eat again one night! Thanks for the great meals!

My hotel stopped serving food at 9:30 across all of the bars and I needed a late night snack after a sunset cruise. Every other restaurant was closing or only had full meals available. A tartaruga had great staff and location, and were still willing to make me food at 10:20. When I asked what the easiest and fastest dish was, they asked me back “what do you want, we are happy to make it”. 10/10 would happily come back for the simplest item on their menu. For the record, I ordered a chicken sandwich(real chicken breast, fresh tomatoes and lettuce, good quality bolo...

Great place to eat. Vegan and Vegetarians don't come short either; there are lots of options. Staff was really nice. Don't be surprised if they talk to you, they are there to help (even if you can't decide on your meal).

It's located in a quiet part of Funchal. There is little to no noise and the speakers play quiet music for you to enjoy during your meal.

Personally I had a great time, a great Sandwich and a good chat...
