We had a week in Madeira which is far too long for me to go without a curry. There are more 'Indian' restaurants here then I was expecting, so how to choose? Google reviews and photos are a start but a lot of the reviews look 'fodgy' to me. Fortunately there are a few highly rated 'Indian' restaurants grouped together very near the Old Town. So I decided to have a look for myself, walking by the open air diners, or allegedly looking for a menu, I choose this place on the look of their curries. My instinct didn't let me down, although I also find that Nepalese restaurants rarely do either. The service was excellent, typically Nepali, extremely helpful and friendly. The meal was hard to fault except the onions in the Bhaji which could have been softer. Very flavoursome curries, chicken breast meat with the heat adjusted to our different tastes. The sides were excellent too. The inside is a bit 'rustic' and there is no A/C, and the outside tables can wobble on the cobble street, but that's half the charm. The one thing I didn't like was that it appeared they allowed smoking which could put some off. The bill wasn't bad considering and they don't add a service charge. It's worth Googling the origin of their name, I won't...
Read moreevery once in a while you have to eat in bad restaurant to really appreciate your local favourites. we ordered delivery on glovo. first of all, you can't order rice and we wrongly assumed that as is in the local fashion the sides come with the dish. the dishes are very pricey so one would assume so. they do not. we ordered momo, which was a definite highlight of our dinner, chicken butter and mixed tandoori grilled meats. chicken butter was overly oily and unlike any chicken butter we ever had; simply not the same dish. it was okay for what it was just unlike any other chicken butter ever. mixed tandoori gilled meats contained exactly one horrifically tasting shrimp and several other bland-tasting cheap cuts of meat with a lot of chewy and slimy bits still attached. these made for about 1/4 of the volume of the food container the meats came in. considering the quality of food we got, the prices are exorbitant. and as far as island food goes, i can only compare this restaurant to mcamericanjunkfood that gave me...
Read moreI wanted to give it more stars. Initially I only had a few issues with the food. As I got a delivery I didn’t really have an option to address them in person. Some pieces of cheesy naan bread were covered in sand. I don’t know whether those were particles from the tandoor oven or it was dropped but we couldn’t finish the bread. I also had a problem with the amount of rice that two people are supposed to share between them to soak up the oily sauces. The portion was so tiny we had to boil our own rice. Mind you there was no option of ordering extra via Bolt. The lamb madras was flavoursome, the lamb Karahi was way too oily. The meat was tender. Samosas tasted nice. However the following morning we both woke up with food poisoning. I know it can’t have been from any other food. It’s beyond disappointing to be suffering all the stomach issues after a not particularly enjoyable meal. All the leftovers went to the bin. This is our second and last time ordering from this place. Shame they don’t practice decent food...
