Without a doubt The BEST Bolo do Caco on Madeira*
I saw it on my first day in Funchal with bunch of TripAdvisor recommendation badges and stickers around their restaurant, but I wanted to try others….and i did that. Tried many others around the island and they are all more or less similar, differently priced depending on how fancy the place is and where you are.
But this one…it is a bit more expensive than bunch of them in the surrounding, but.. after trying it I just don’t see others.
Just to say, I had to come 3 times justo to try it for the first time because they make it fresh in the morning( ready around 11) and they close the store when they sell it and thats it.
Best time to come around noon, but they are as good as they get even on the closing.
Their bread is just so fresh, nice and soft and really makes a difference. Their prego is very good but my absolute favorite is the one with chorizo and cheese. You get much more chorizo than other places.
The only downside is that pregos( steak sandwiches) come with chips instead of fries or some other potatoes.

Read moreWe had 2 'bolo do caco' here. We went here since we saw it mentioned and recommended on TripAdvisor and other comparable websites. De 'speciality' was amazing! The meat with wine and garlic is perfect. It almost melts in your mouth and the flavors are so nice! The other one was a full on 'bolo do caco' with all on it. It believe it was called 'the supreme'. Nice flavors, it gets you filled if you are hungry. The meat on this one was just a bit chewy, which makes the food a 4 star instead of a 5.
Service is friendly, spoke proper english and was quick. Als the tables were clean, which is always a good sign. They did spill some fat on my trousers when they brought the food. But that happens, wasn't her fault.
Last (and least) is the atmosphere. You are sitting in a shopping street on standard chairs with basic tables. Nothing is done here to make it prettier or more cosy.
Go here for the amazing food and that's it!
Ps. Price is nice for...
Read moreThe food is really good. The bread is fresh and so are the ingredients inside. The traditional one with pork garlic and white wine is the real deal.
The staff however could be better. They are rather nice, but chaotic. Bringing an ash trey, taking an order and that's simultaneously with somebody trying to get the bill. There are not many tables, but still they cannot handle who is waiting for which table. No to mention the pigeons are fighting for food on the tables (because the leftovers stay on tables for long time).
My advice: put number on the tables and organize who sits where. That prevents the mess and customers would be more comfortable.
Overall nice food, but to go, not to...
