BEST GOULASH/CHILI CON CARNE (Without Beans) I consider myself to be a chili con carne connoisseur and I was missing a good bowl of chili. I was listening to music in the center of old town Lagos and Googling any place that served chili when the gentleman drawing portraits sat next to me with what looked like a bowl of chili. I asked him what that was and he said it’s German goulash. I said it looks like American chili. He replied, similar but without the beans. I asked him where he got it and he said Belo Cantinho. So, off I went and ordered one for myself. Now, I’ve never had goulash, but I can certainly tell you this is the best goulash aka chili con carne without beans I’ve ever had. Now this place is a padaria, or bakery, and this was supposed to be their soup of the day so it might not be there everyday. We passed by in the morning on our way to the beach and picked up a hazelnut triangle to go and one pulled pork sandwich to eat on the spot. I was a bit torn between getting a toasty bagel or the sandwich but we needed something hearty to get us through 2 hrs if kayaking, and the sandwich really hit the spot. The hazelnut triangle was a nice little treat; not too sweet and chock-full of hazelnuts. Price was more than reasonable. We were in Lagos for vacation from Canada and this place was one of our best finds. We went twice while we were there, once for coffee and pastries and once for lunch. The pastries were super fresh, melt in your mouth. My husband had a strawberry bismarck and it was so good that he had to have another. The coffee was excellent!
