Affordable, friendly, local, warm food that feels like home
Went to Apache looking for a warm meal after a cold spring rain. Amidst the restaurant row of Asian, fusion, vegan, Georgian, halal, and everything eclectic in between, catering to guesthouses and hotels in the area, lies a hidden gem of good honest Portuguese food. From the front, it looked like a bakery without the pastries, the locals looked at us like we got to the wrong place but there's a downstairs dining area, that our sweet dear front hostess showed us. You can eat upstairs or down. A few universal manual gestures of eating and poor broken attempts at Portuguese was reciprocated with sympathetic gracious service: menu with English translates and escort downstairs. So happens, our visit coincided with a very large party that occupied many tables of young, enthusiastic people. That was telling, good affordable food speaks volumes. Our dinner was prompt: sopa - vegetable soup, bitoque à apache - steak with fries and egg sunny side up, febras fritas ou grelhadas - fried grilled steak, 500 ml of house red wine, bread, chocolate mousse. Even the large crowd had their food served fast relative to their size. Super supper stuffed! Hobbled and wobbled out of there, completely satisfied. A warm belly braves the cold weather. This place would be great if you only had one meal a day or on a fixed pension income or students....
Read moreOverall, the food price quality was okay. There were a few issues when it comes to the surrounding: They try it pack everyone as much as possible inside. You have almost no privacy, there’s a table 5 cm from you left or right. You have issues with getting out of your chair because of the people behind you because they make it so crowded it’s really loud there. The woman who owns the place also yells a lot to the kitchen, I suppose. there’s no ventilation so it’s really warm inside
Extra things that weren’t enjoyable: you can only pay with cash on the sign it says €1 for a beer with a big size. But when you get it it’s really small (It’s misleading) only one of the waiters (I think the owner) was friendly, the other 2 weren’t, maybe because we were tourists.
When it comes to the food; it’s good food for its price. About 6 euro per meal, it’s a good quick food. The meat was a little tough, the eggs were good though. I really liked the rice, it was delicious. The fries were okay. Overall for a quick meal it’s good, but I advice you to not sit inside and go outside if you...
Read moreAmazing place! We only found this by walking past it as it didn’t show up on our search for restaurants and I’m so glad we found it. Super affordable, great, friendly service and the food was delicious! We were staying nearby and ate here multiple times. It’s full of locals and has 2 floors inside, we ate outside because we had our dog. Great fish and meat dishes, and the clams were delicious! The 1/2 order was more than enough for a large appetite. 100% recommended if you’d like some affordable, traditional Portuguese food. The only dish we didn’t enjoy was the...
