I got my cheese pizza delivered. The positives: It’s a pretty pizza, and the undercarriage is the closest thing resembling New York style in Lisbon that I’ve had. The basil and tomato sauce were also fresh. The negatives, however, kind of outweigh the positives. The pizza as described over the phone by the restaurant was not 40 cm, which is the bare minimum for a standard New York pizza. Instead it’s about 35 to 37 cm (I measured it), making it slightly larger than the average pizza here in Lisbon. This is a problem because as any New Yorker will attest, the size defines the feel of a New York slice — and falling short of this is a shame since Lisbon, from what I can see, doesn’t have an actual New York size pizza. More disappointing is something you’ll notice by closing your eyes and taking a bite: the ingredients lack flavor. What they call Parmesan snow, while pretty, is utterly flavorless. The crust has barely any flavor and is really dry. And while the tomato sauce is okay, it’s merely dotted across the cheese, which is a ratio that compounds the dryness. Man, I’ve never said this about a NY pie but it could have used some more grease. To remedy this, I doused my pizza in sriracha sauce. I also believe they use too little cheese for it to be a New York pizza, given the lack of flavor, but also given how extremely light the pizza feels in the box. Ordering a 40 cm, 16 inch, pizza tends to be pretty hefty. Instead, it feels more like I spent too much money on too little, flavorless ingredients. I hope the pizzeria is successful, but I hope they make...

When you finally get tired of the endless wave of Neapolitan pizza in Lisbon, soft, floppy, expensive for its size, and rarely perfect in execution, salvation comes in the form of Bonkers.
Here it’s pure New York: a crust that actually crunches when you bite it, generous layers of cheese that stretch like they’re auditioning for Broadway, and sauces bold enough to make you forget about delicate San Marzano purity. Neapolitan is all about elegance, minimalism, and quick-fired romance, while New York is about attitude, comfort, and unapologetic flavor.
Service is sharp and attentive, the design echoes the Bronx with raw tiles and grit, and the soundtrack rolls back time with golden-era 90s hip hop.
Lisbon needed this. Finally, a pizza you can fold, eat with your hands, and actually feel full without...
Read moreWow, the pizza at Bonkers is the best we have had in Lisbon. Yes, they got New York style pizza right, the crust is crunchy with no flop and the red sauce rocks it. My wife is from New Jersey and gives it 2 thumbs up. Love they did not go with smaller individual size pizza pies and you get a proper sized pie and slice. The 50/50 is perfect for a couple with different tastes and filling for each. I was able to enjoy the Pineapple Express and my wife who does not acknowledge pineapple on a pizza should exist enjoyed the amazing cheese with red sauce. You have to try the Pineapple Express - it is the perfect combination of sweet and spicy with the ham and peppers. Also, how are they getting Budweiser in Lisbon? Very nice touch from the owners who are Portuguese and NOT from NY - amazing job guys! We will...
