Ramiro: A Crustacean Paradise in Lisbon's Anjos Neighborhood In the bustling culinary landscape of Lisbon, Ramiro stands as a veritable haven for seafood aficionados. Nestled in the Anjos neighborhood, far from the tourist-heavy Baixa, this restaurant offers an experience that is both intimate and unpretentiously delightful, a true reflection of Portugal's coastal bounty. Upon entering Ramiro, one is immediately struck by the casual, almost familial atmosphere. The decor is unpretentious, allowing the real stars—the seafood and the service—to shine. My husband’s glass was never empty, thanks to the diligent servers who attended to our needs with an almost uncanny attentiveness. There’s something distinctly charming about a place where the staff seem genuinely invested in your enjoyment, their warmth reflected in the seamless service and ready smiles. The menu is a testament to Portugal's rich maritime heritage, with an impressive 90% devoted to crustaceans and mollusks. The garlic clams and spider crab were particularly noteworthy, the latter chosen by us from a tank—a charmingly participatory prelude to our meal. Our waitress, balancing the sizable crab with ease and grace, even paused to allow us to approve the specimen before its preparation. It’s these small, personal touches that elevate the experience at Ramiro. Each dish arrived with a focus on simplicity, emphasizing the natural flavors of the seafood. The crab, presented with a sauce prepared in its shell, was a standout, offering a rich, briny dip that perfectly complemented the meat. The garlic clams were a fragrant delight, while the spicy shrimp added a piquant kick, and the salt-grilled tiger prawns delivered a smoky, savory depth. The oysters, offered in both salt and fresh water varieties, are a must-try for the purist seafood lover. Accompanying the meal, the wine list showcases a selection of local wines—greens, whites, and reds—though most diners opt for a cold beer, the perfect accompaniment to the briny fare. The understated service, where recommendations and refills are subtly managed, enhances the dining experience, allowing the food and convivial atmosphere to take center stage. The pricing at around 70 euros per person, including tip, is more than justified by the quality and freshness of the offerings. It is an investment in a culinary experience that celebrates the best of Portuguese seafood without pretension. Ramiro is not just a meal; it's a rite of passage for any seafood lover visiting Lisbon. It's a place where the joy of dining is as much about the vibrant, relaxed atmosphere as it is about the exquisite seafood. A visit to Ramiro is not merely recommended; it’s essential.

Abbreviated version: For seafood ONLY aficionados, nothing else. Bourdain draw in an unattractive neighborhood that had excellent food options and great service. Full review: Honestly, Anthony Bourdain drew us to this place, but after reading the recent reviews, I ask my wife to cancel the reservation. Unfortunately, she was upset that she had to give her credit card and did not want to risk the $25 per person fee, so we ventured out. (Spoiler alert: they will have already charged your card the $25 euro per person, and it will have been deducted from your final check upon presentation.) The neighborhood walk from the Rossi Square...do not take the Google maps streets...call a cab. Nervously approaching the restaurant, the downstairs garden full of diners with plates of stacked bread, a complete harbinger. Ushered upstairs after a radio guard confirmed our reservation, and getting to the top of the stairs, again a man confirmed our reservation a second time, but, fearful of my peering into the room directly across, which seemed like a NYC packed Dim Sum lunch, I thought...please not today. Fortunately, we were directed to the back room (photo), which was cozy, air-conditioned and very charming, with a windowed table overlooking a small terrace. Beautiful. The first waiter efficient and answered a number of questions that were in past reviews without reservation. Once I QR coded the menu, I called over another waiter for some recommendations. Binod took over. Had to be a manager or a top waiter, as he completely won us over. Top notch service. His calls were the steamed clams...succulent, larger than most Portuguese cuisine, and shimp with garlic...an excellent choice for most basic seafood lovers. Ordered another 4 oysters, briney, but large and satisfying. Do Not Eat so much of the bread if you have plans for more. Won't be disappointed, but think this place is reserved for more advanced crustaceans fans. Scarlet shimp at $95 euros/kg (about $20/ piece), Alaskan Crab at $141 euro/kg, giant Tiger Prawns, and Rock Lobster. NO salad, no vegetables, no extras....steak sandwiches for dessert. Binod extended additional service, and acutely attentive without being annoying. I'm giving this place 5 stars for the outstanding service I received and what little I had of the menu was 4 to 5 stars, hoping the additional items would be of the same or better quality. A lot of locals here seemed to be a good sign. Not sure I had to come here for the experience, but happy I did.

Arrived at around 8pm on a weeknight, and the place was packed! We came without reservations so we had to grab a ticket from the machine and wait our turn. Thankfully there is a dedicated waiting area where they serve drinks and some snacks. The waiting area also had a few monitors where you get a good view of which number is up. We had A64 and they were serving A40 when we arrived. My partner and I didn’t stay inside the waiting area because it was pretty crowded that night and we wanted to get some fresh air so we waited outside instead with a view of the screen. The wait was pretty long. On average the numbers jumped 10 spots per hour that night (We asked for a table of two. There’s a different letter assigned if you are a bigger party - B for 3, C for 4, etc). We made it in after 2 hours of wait. Waiters were very nice and friendly with good command of English. Once seated we were immediately served bread and the waiter apologized for the long wait. We ordered 4 items - The Goose Barnacles, The Edible Crab, A Giant Tiger Prawn and 2 Scarlet Prawns. The goose barnacles were surprisingly delicious with a strong sea taste, great as an appetizer. The edible crab was heavenly, and one was big enough for two people. It was so rich you had to take breaks in between bites and really savor it. This was a cold crab preparation but surprisingly it wasn’t raw and was very sweet. The scarlet prawns were amazingly big and so full of flavor especially the fat on the head. The waiter helps you out by cutting the head open and dousing the shrimp body with this fatty rich sauce. Definitely the highlight of the night. My recommendation is to get the Scarlet Prawns and the Edible Crab - I think those two are harder to get anywhere else and I think Ramiro does them really well. The Goose Barnacles were also good if you’re feeling a bit adventurous. I personally felt we could’ve done away with the Giant Tiger Prawn as it was nothing special and I could probably get that somewhere else. Please also get a reservation if you can at least 2 weeks before. This will eliminate the looong wait. Bill was around 110 euros for 2 people - yes a splurge. Would I come back? Maybe, but only if I manage to secure a reservation.

Before traveling to Lisbon, I was searching for restaurants and Cervejaria Ramiro popped up with a lot of great reviews. I also found out (after the fact) that it was one of the spots that were featured on both Somebody Feed Phil and Anthony Bourdain, and now that I've dined there, I can see why. I don't believe they accept reservations so my family and I (6 people) were definitely expecting a wait when we arrived on a Thursday at around 8, prime dinner time. Luckily, the place is huge and we didn't need to wait so we got a table right away. We ordered: -Toasted bread with butter - simple but very good -Manchego cheese - Manchego isn't for everyone but it is for me -Iberian ham - I mean can you really go wrong with Iberian ham? It went especially well with the Manchego and the toasted bread -Al Ajillo Especial - this is garlic shrimp but instead of peeled headless whole shrimp, they cut the shrimp in pieces and leave you the head, which is the best part. This was probably my favorite dish of the night. I love a good garlic shrimp -Garlic clams - the clams tasted fresh and were very flavorful -Canilha (spiny dye-murex) - these look like mini conches and I have never had them before let alone seen them on a menu so we decided to give it a try. They come steamed. Honestly, it wasn't very memorable because looking back, I can't really remember anything about the taste or the texture -Percebes (barnacles) - another item that we wanted to try and never had before. These also come steamed without anything but this was a close second to the garlic shrimp. We ended up ordering more of these. The texture and taste reminds me of octopus or squid. These are pretty pricey because apparently, it can be dangerous to harvest them. They live on the sides of rocks by the ocean, where the waves are usually really rough, making them hard to get to The menu is probably 90% seafood, so if you don't like seafood, this place is not for you. My BIL ordered a steak sandwich and it was just not good - very dry. But if you stick to the seafood, you'll be good. It's definitely one of the best meals I've had in Lisbon.

Recommended by Anthony Bourdain, we had to try this place. There seems to 2 sections to this restaurant: The beuatiful downstairs fine dining section (those with reservations); and those without reservations (upstairs.) We did not have reservations. When we arrived, we were led to the non-reservation section where we were given a ticket and led to the big waiting room. It was like the CA DMV! You wait for your number to be called. We arrived (early dinner) around 730pm. We waited 15 min. Instead being led to the beautiful downstairs dining room, we were led upstairs to the multiple room, dining room for the tourists and masses. It was lively atmosphere. You could manyngroups of Americans everywhere (thanks Mr Bourdain for making this place famous.) We order clams, garlic shrimp, crab and scarlett shrimp (which was recommended by our wonderful waiter.) Dinner included delicious buttered, toasted, bread. First, the garlic shrimp came out boiling hot. The bread was perfect to dip into the garlic shrimp olive oil. Next, came the clams: Meh. They were small and the flavor just mediocre. Ive had better elsewhere. Next came the chilled stone crab. I was expecting hot and steamed crab. Nonetheless, the crab was fresh and sweet. Just cold. SCARLETT SHRIMP. I need to dedicate this section just for the highlight of the evening. The waiter carefully and individually removed the head and butterfly cut the shrimp. Then he cut open the head and scooped out, with a spoon, the dark-colored juices from the head. Then he spread the juices over the 2 halves of the shrimp. We never had shrimp prepared this way before, but when we took our first bite...OMG, OMG. OMG. The four of us all agreed that this was the best dish, not only of the night, but maybe ever. It was definitely my favorite dish from my 11 days throughout Spain and Portugal. Lastly, we got the dinner bill. OMG. It was a lot less than we expected. About 150 euros for 4 of us. Remember to give a cash tip to the waiter/waitress.
