Come to Portugal for many reasons but not for the local beer. Sagres and Super Bock are the two main brands that seem to have an unhealthy monopoly all over the country's bar and supermarkets. Luckily there is a growing craft beer scene, certainly in Lisbon with lots of new micro-breweries trying their hand at various styles and a growing assortment of bars selling them and also selling imported beers from around the world.
The Cerveteca was one of the first bars I visited when I arrived in Lisbon and one that I pop back to when I'm in the area, especially with my Belgium beer loving friend. There is always a fine selection of beers on tap and helpful bar staff who will give you advice and a taste if you aren't sure what you want. There is also a nice selection of bottled beers from around the word and even occasionally some English beer, which is sadly a rarity in Portugal.
The space is pleasant enough, basically furnished and decorated and I've always been able to grab a table and settle in for the evening. The ambiance is usually laid back and not to raucous, although I've never been on a Friday or Saturday night but generally the area around here is fairly genteel.

The prices were very reasonable given the uniqueness. The bottle prices are expensive, but again given the scarcity of variety in beer in Portugal it was understandable. Read moreThey get an A for effort. This place is out of the way, but may be the best representation of the burgeoning craft beer movement in Portugal. They also have a good selection of bottled beers from throughout Europe. Mostly Belgian and German. The 10 beer sampler was from this list. The 2 on the separate board were hand drawn cask ales. All were discernable as being attempts at the style they were claiming to be, but not all hit the mark.the Belgian golden strong and the barleywine we're the closest. I will go back next time...
