Franguinho Real — Restaurant in Lisbon

I’m quite surprised with the positive reviews. Apart from the restaurant aesthetic, the meal was very underwhelming and disappointing. My welcome was very cold from whom I assume is the owner. Although there was a language barrier, no effort was made to make me feel welcome. The first move was for the owner to cover the table in ‘extras’ I did not ask for. Bread, olives and different butters. It was obvious I was liable for these extras. This is a bad impression from the start. I asked a question about the chicken, the owner said ‘okay chicken’ and started to walk away with the menu. Wait a minute buddy bring that back. The service was lifeless. I can assume the woman was his wife and there was also a very under-motivated man that showed equally low enthusiasm. The chicken was cooked badly, dry and under-seasoned. The potato’s were crisps and unenjoyable. The salad was drenched in oil and unimaginative. I thought the cold welcome was due to the language barrier however locals were treated equally. No eye contact was made from the woman. She turned her back as customers made their orders politely. The owner came over just as I finished to say ‘ok?’ Unenthusiastically with his thumb. Definitely not recommended. Go anywhere else.

Also - Because the woman ignored me completely as I walked out, without a goodbye or thank you, I change my review from 2 stars to 1....

Fabulous Franghuino - Really ! Have been searching for a really good traditional chicken restaurant for a while on trips to Portugal, and this one is a gem. Amazing food in a fantastic warm, friendly, family-style restaurant. Excellent service throughout our dinner, great bottle on vinho verde, appetizers, extra breads and a sharing platter of the most outstanding frango we have ever eaten, served up with homemade potato crisps and fresh salads. And to follow some super tasty desserts of almond cake and chocolate mousse, all rounded off by an unexpected gesture of a free glass of porto for the parents and lollies for the children. Clairement ils nous voulaient pas de nous comme clients. Famille de 2 adultes et 2 enfants du Canada. Soit ils n'aiment pas les touristes ou les enfants ou les deux. Aucun effort au niveau de la langue. Je parle 4 langues dont 2 similaires au Portugais (Italien, Espagnol, anglais, françaisl) pourtant j'ai dû sortir une application pour réussir à communiquer avec le personnel. Le menu semblait intéressant donc nous avons essayé d'y aller le jeudi mais le propriétaire disait être complet ce soir là, j'ai demandé pour le lendemain et c'était aussi complet mais il a pris ma réservation pour le samedi. Une fois sur place, le service était très froid et on nous a placé le plus loin possible des autres clients. Je demande s'ils ont une chaise haute pour le bébé, de prime abord le propriétaire répond que non mais finalement il dit en avoir une mais trop grande. Je demande a la voir et c'est exactement ce qu'il nous faut. Sentiment étrange de ne pas vouloir de nous sur place... En arrivant on nous sert du pain (2.25€), des olives (1.50€), du beurre (3.60€ pour 3 petits cups...!!!!? voir photo.. du VOL), une tartinade de thon (2€)...le tout non commandé mais grassement facturé sans le savoir jusqu'à réception de la facture. Au moment de payer je mentionne vouloir payer avec mastercard, le serveur part chercher sa machine mais le propriétaire l'arrête et me dit qu'ils ne prennent pas la carte de crédit. Tout pour nous faire sentir non désirés. Pourtant nous sommes des voyageurs sympathiques et ouverts sur les autres cultures, toujours à la recherche d'expériences culinaires locales et nous faisons de gros efforts pour le langage. Un conseil à ce restaurateur : si vous voulez opérer un restaurant sans avoir de touristes, allez donc dans un village lointain, car la capitale du Portugal vient avec une affluence de touristes et il faut faire avec. p.s. la nourriture était somme toute très bien. Le beurre ne valait toutefois vraiment pas...
