I considered whether to write this review or not. Food is nice, but we have been treated so badly!
For reference, my wife and I had lunch at this restaurant during our honeymoon. This place on Maps has amazing reviews.
From the moment we walked in, we had bad looks - tourists? We are a quiet couple from Germany. We ordered two appetizers, two seafood plates, and a bottle of wine.
Suddenly the waitress taking our order screamed, and I quote: "Do you know this wine?? Or did you choose it because it was the CHEAPEST?"
She was LOUD, for the whole restaurant to hear. It wasn't even the least expensive white, at about 22€ per bottle, with the minimum being around 16-17€. I agree it is on the lower side for a restaurant, but it shouldn't come with a complimentary telling off. No, we don't know the wine. We just arrived and we would appreciate some recommendations.
We were speechless but tried to de-escalate. She then "offered" to bring us different wines and after tasting two, we chose different glasses at 7€ each.
We appreciated the change, but the atmosphere was clearly tense on both sides after this interaction.
We then waited, and our dishes arrived in this order: Two octopus plates (very tasty) Hot appetizers arrived halfway through the main meal. The big plates had to be crammed on the small table and sat there. A bottle of water, which we ordered at the start, arrived at the end of the meal. As if we could chug it and leave.
Throughout this meal, we felt like "b series" clients, with them judging our choices and even forgetting our food. At 65€, this was supposed to be a special, memorable lunch experience for us, but instead, it left us feeling humiliated and disappointed by the lack of...
Read moreRacist restaurant. I made a reservation for my birthday here and when we showed up, waiters saw me but nobody greeted us. When we were being seated, I changed my mind and wanted to switch back to the initial table because the second choice the waiter provided is too close to other customers, the waiter said to me “sure, it’s democratic”. It was a weird word to use in this situation but I thought maybe there’s a word in Portuguese sounds like this but meant differently. After we were finally seated, nobody gave us a menu or offered water, leaving us there for 10 minutes. When my husband finally got the attention from one of the waitresses, and I told her what happened, she didn’t wait until I finish my sentence and basically ignored me. Then she went back to talk to someone, and another waiter came by, however he only gave us one menu, not to me, but to my husband who is not an Asian, then the waiter only talks to my husband while I was trying to talk to him too, as if I didn’t exist. For the entire time, nobody ever tried to make any kind of communication with me even if I was obviously trying very hard to communicate with them. Soon after we were seated, there’s another couple (who are both white) arrived at the restaurant. They were greeted immediately and brought to a table, handed the menu, offered water. I’m amazed by how I was discriminated against by this restaurant. Also btw this place is crowded and loud. This restaurant is definitely the worst I’ve ever been. I hope the owner is aware of this and has a chance to educate the employees properly about racism, discrimination, respect, and racial and gender equality as these are basic manners for anyone in a society, not to mention to the...
Read moreLet’s start with the fact that on some Monday evening at the end of July, I was looking for a nice place to taste the Portuguese food.
Following a nice walk around Bairro Alto and Chiado, I found myself in „o Portugues, Chiado” and it was a uniquely great choice.
After chatting with the lovely waiter and the chef, who creates a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere with her presence among the guests, I ordered the Lagareiro octopus and a glass of wine.
A few moments later, I experienced the finest taste of roasted octopus of my life. The dish consisted of ingredients of the best quality, prepared increadibly deliciously. There are no words to express this amazing taste…
After paying the bill and going outside, I felt I wanted to enjoy this wonderful atmosphere for at least a little while longer and returned to enjoy the wine at a table outside. It was extremely satisfying.
Great staff taking care of the guests needs and open to discussions about the menu and particular dishes.
The atmosphere was further enhanced by live music.
Finally, the wonderful chef Cecilia who makes wonders with the foods, is unbelievable charming and makes the whole experience special. An open and warm person you would wish to meet on your path.
I wish I’d had a chance to get back next day to try other dishes, unfortunately I was leaving Lisbon. I'm sure I'll be back on my next visit to Lisbon, taste more and feel again the great atmosphere of o Purtugues, Chiado.
Didn't take any pretty pictures but kept memories that will certainly bring me back to this...
