Was ecstatic about this for a week — and was super let down (all due to horrible service). When we arrived, I was so excited and had been talking about going to Otaka all week since our reservation was confirmed. We were seated… and then the downhill experience began.
After we were seated, no one came to our table for 10 minutes, despite there being servers walking around pretty consistently. We watched people who arrived after us get drinks and starters before we had even been approached. Ok, fine… not the worst but not the best first impression.
Eventually got our order in for the tasting menu plus included a few a la carte items as well. Drinks came quickly enough so I was hopeful again.
First course came out - took some time but not terrible - and I was a little confused because it was the second course listed that was brought out. (But all good, let’s eat!) No explanation outside of what the dish was… a little strange as I’ve dined at other tasting menu restaurants - both with and without Michelin stars - and they all did more. The fish course itself was great though, so that was a win!
Second course came and it was the 3rd course on the menu. This time I asked about the first course that was skipped and they realized they made a mistake, apologized, and said they would get the first course. Okay, strike 2 but no huge problem - I wanted to love this place so badly.
The night went on and we were brought the proper courses. (So glad I asked about the first one because it was my favorite and we would have missed it!). We never got any explanations, so different than what we expected but hey. The food itself was excellent, so big kudos to the chef.
The strike 3 occurred as we got the bill. We checked it and they had charged us for an unknown starter. I asked what it was and he said it was for the edamame — which we never received nor ordered. It would have been fine if that was an automatic initial starter that they bring out and charge for, but we straight up never received it. He apologized and asked another server and they both stared at us - either very confused or accusingly, I’m not sure. Either way, not a good feeling.
They did correct the bill and the food was fabulous, but unfortunately for Otaka and the chef - the service was very subpar. Any normal restaurant has better service without so many mistakes and accidental charges… it shouldn’t happen at “the best restaurant in Sao Miguel” that people think deserves Michelin recognition.
Food is a 5, service is a 2… average it out to 3.5. I would still go, but have lower expectations and understand it’ll be an okay experience rather than an...

Read moreTreated myself to the Discovery 8-course menu one night during my trip to Ponta Delgada. They only have two seatings and because I was on tour during the day, I got the 930pm (should make reservations). The atmosphere was very chic and design very minimalistic with open kitchen. There was outdoor seating as well. The 1st course was pieces of cornbread and salted butter with Azorean seaweed. The butter itself could be a course. For the snacks, there was a piece of sashimi (can’t remember which fish) and a fried rice roll with spicy tuna. The 3rd dish was my fave - Azorean amberjack sashimi in a watermelon cucumber emulsion. Such a refreshing combination and I drank the watermelon juice after. The 4th was 3-pieces of cured mackerel with finger lime, which was my first time trying. A bit sour but complimented the fish well. Next was the Azorean beef tataki (which is on their á la carte menu). The meat just melts in your mouth. Then the shrimp tempura, which was probably my least fave. It tasted great but wasn’t too special compared to other courses. Too much spicy mayo/yuzu sauce and batter, and alot of slightly dress greens. This is on their á la carte menu as well. For the main, I chose Azorean beef fillet that came with a sauce that tasted like BBQ, and some pepper leaves salad (really tasty). For dessert was a beautiful cheesecake and passion fruit sorbet. Service was exceptional - all were super attentive and described each dish. I saw them going to each table (inside and out) and engaging with everyone. Recommend this place - mix of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine with Azorean...
