(updated 11/06/23: in response to owner's comment: -- we requested a black and tan and the waitress serving us told me you'd done this with Sagres. Also, I grew up in NY, however, my Irish parent's family recipe will always have my heart, though yours was quite good. My speaking of NY blue cheese sauce was talking about how nostalgic your amazing wings made me for Buffalo wings-- Not certain why the angry response to my positive review.
The black velvet pint in the photo is Guinness poured over Sagres beer, this pub's version of the black and tan, and it was quite good with the Portuguese pale ale mix, though a bit sweeter than we expected. The stew is made with beef, and the menu said it also uses wine, and it was a hearty, rich version of this dish (though, being Irish, I will always be partial to my family's recipe). The garlic mashed potatoes were buried in the stew, and had a wonderful, think consistency and mouth-feel, but the stew broth was so rich, I couldn't taste the garlic. I recommend the large bowl if you're getting dinner, it was just enough to be satisfying on it's own. The spicy wings were a wonderful surprise...having grandparents who lived near the Anchor bar in Buffalo NY were the Buffalo wings recipe was invented, I never expected to encounter them in the Ačores!! And the chef was spot on with the vinegar-tangy hot sauce, juicy-crisp, perfectly cooked wings! This will be my go to place when I crave a taste of my childhood nostalgia for true upstate wings! If there had been NY blue cheese dipping sauce with fresh celery, as we eat them there, I might have thought I been transported back to grandma's neighborhood pub in...
Read moreNed Kelly's is the type of bar/pub that everyone should experience at least once in their life. Am I saying this drinking establishment is a bucket list item? ABSOLUTELY! Named after an Australian malcontent but completely a traditional Irish bar, this place is the real deal. Short of visiting Belfast, Ned Kelly's is the closest you'll get to an Irish Pub experience....and don't worry, the Guiness is poured and served the way it should be. Kevin, the barkeep & proprietor, is a gem and an individual who holds up the standard of what an Irish bar is and should be. He is a refreshing bit of old-school straight talk with no woke garbage and twice the common sense. I will leave it to you to speak with him of his tales of daring-do, but as one who has been there & done that, he is the genuine article. A visit to say hello, shake his hand, and have a Guiness is well worth the trip no matter what continent you're on. Unfortunately Kevin had recently fired his cook (an amusing story in itself), so my partner in crime and me didn't get a chance to enjoy a tasty burger or other vittles...but the beverages, atmosphere, music, rugby, and conversation more than made up for the lack of chow. I'm hoping that upon my return Kevin is able to find a suitable cook, but it certainly won't stop me from visiting. To those military, fire, police, & pilots, be sure to bring your unit/precinct/company/airline/aircraft patches, zaps, and stickers to bequeath to Kevin. A wall of service is the only thing I found lacking when I was there, and he mentioned he'd love to have one, so let's help him out! To those who go, enjoy,...
Read moreWow, Ned Kelly's! What an aggressively nasty response to Cassandra's positive review. I was, in fact, the person who asked for a black and tan. I know that neither smithwicks nor bass ale are available here, and said that a substitute (even Super Bock) was acceptable. It was your clueless and vapid server who asserted that the "black velvet" is in fact Guinness and Sagres. When we tasted it, we doubted that assertion, but did not challenge it. Cassandra was being polite in her assessment. We had looked forward to visiting Ned Kelly's for some time, and as island residents looked forward to making it a regular place to go, but if this is how you feel I guess we will not be back. Oh, and BTW it is in rather poor taste to post different prices for items on the same (limited) menu in different places. Nice cat, though. Friendliest staff member we met while we were there. Certainly better than the server who attempted to snag our change as a tip. UPDATE: I might understand a business owner posting a meaningless and abusive response to a poor review which does not contain any insight or information. But for most business owners I would expect that a detailed and thoughtful poor review would be appreciated as a suggestion for improvement. The abuse is neither appropriate nor...
