We were looking forward to coming here since we got to Ponta Delgada. Not sure what the review about no soya sauce, wasabi, and ginger is all about but they have all three. We came here with a baby so our experience it based on that.
Food: It's pretty decent! The sushi (we mainly had salmon) was so good. The only thing I didn't like was all the mayo or cream cheese in almost all rolls and hand rolls. The cooked food all arrived hot, which I love — but it's not fantastic. The pictures don't always match what you actually get, so it's a toss up. Overall the sushi, which is what we can for was good and good quality.
Pricing: Based on food alone the price is good! $15-$25 per person+ the cost of any food waste. Drinks aren't included in the cost.
Location: It's close to the center so it will be packed because it's the closest sushi place to most hotels. There isn't a lot of parking and it's a smaller place, so it fills up fast.
Service: This is where this place completely dropped the ball for us and really made the whole experience one that would cause us to hesitate recommending it to other tourists/international visitors. When we got there, they sat us at a table that was meant for two people close to the door and they placed the highchair on the end which would have been completely in the way of their/others walking path. We eventually asked to be moved, which they did so that was great. Once settled we waited for a server to come, which they never did until we flagged them down. No one told us how the ordering worked, if they were closing soon or walked us through anything (this was out first time there, so we figured it's the food number+ quantity) but when asked how many pieces come in the sushi rolls the server said if you want 3 pieces they will give you 4. After submitting our first order and getting a few of our items, not all, another server came over to ask if we want anything more because they're closing soon. This was the same server who sat us not even 10 minutes before the first dish came out, so we felt rushed and annoyed. When we asked questions about the other foods they weren't very helpful, I asked the same server to let me know if the items we already ordered will be coming so we can just place our last order for items we want and not duplicate it. She came back with our second round papers and told us these items are coming and that the items from the first round aren't being made and to reorder — so with that we proceeded as instructed, and because you order your food on cut up pieces of blank paper you can't track, confirm or deny if what you ordered is yours or the quantity is correct. They messed up our order and brought us more than what we wanted, which meant we had to pay for the food waste — this was annoying because I hate wasting food. Felt like a ploy to charge more. When we mentioned this to the servers (even saying we're willing to pay the food waste charge, we just wanted to point out an issue)they preferred to deny, argue and blame us for not knowing how to order. We felt rushed to eat, paid the food waste price and left because at that point it's a food eating contest not a meal and the environment wasn't welcoming.
If service or how long you wait to be served doesn't matter to you, then I'd say check this place out as the sushi is good and the food came out hot. I'd just suggest taking a picture of each order to ensure you can track it.
Side note for international visitors: When we came they weren't accepting Visa or MasterCard, just cash or Portuguese baking cards. So come...
Read moreI’ve come here multiple times since they’ve opened so I have a pretty good collection of experiences. Some good; some average; some downright bad. I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant. Let’s start with the not so good. Don’t come after two, period. Kitchen closes at 2:30. They have a no wasting food policy and if you leave enough food on the plate you’re paying 7€/16 pieces as stated on paper. This means you’re either ordering too little or feeling pressured to order A LOT. I personally have never had to pay but mainly because we were forced to eat so much sushi we almost left the place crawling. It was not fun.
Now to the average. The staff are hit or miss. Some are really polite, some give you the impression they’re doing you a favor by servicing you. Initially I shrugged it off because we all have bad days but it is a recurring theme. On busier days, we’ve had multiple mix-ups related to our orders, getting items we did not order or never getting the items at all. This happened more than three times in the past and since my return they seem to have improved.
And now to the good. This is the #1 all you can eat because like it or not, all these things kind of seem irrelevant because the food, for the price, is really good. I’ve had almost every item on the menu and not once have I been disappointed, especially the stir fries and the noodles. There aren’t many all you can eat sushi restaurants here and they’re all weak when compared to this one’s quality. This is a strong factor in favour of this place, considering they’re all the same price. Of course it is not top grade sushi, you will find restaurants with much better (and much pricier €€€) quality, but you can’t expect that for 15€-eat-what-you-want.
In conclusion:
I can’t stress this enough, COME BEFORE TWO, make a reservation, and you won’t be disappointed. Food is awesome, you’ll like it. Staff can be cool or not, depends on the person, but you won’t care cause the food rocks and...
