I was very excited to visit Hanu' lui Manuc because of its remarkable history. I love historic restaurants and will go out of my way to experience them, and this property is undeniably beautiful. It was a little hard to find when dropped off by Uber, but stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. That said, the dining experience did not live up to the setting. Communication was difficult with my first server, who didn’t speak much English. I want to be absolutely clear: I do not feel entitled to others speaking my language when I am in their country. Romanian is the language here, and that is completely fair. My mistake was assuming that because this is such a popular tourist destination, more English would be spoken. I was wrong to expect that, and I share it only to set expectations for other tourists — don’t assume English will be widely spoken. Even with translation apps, there were still misunderstandings.
The food and drinks were underwhelming. Their famous lemonade, which I was excited to try, tasted like lime juice diluted with water, with a few berries on top. I know this may reflect the local style, and I respect that cultural difference, but it was not enjoyable for me.
The most concerning issue was allergy handling. I had listed my anaphylactic pineapple allergy in my reservation notes and also told my first server. The Pavlova on the menu didn’t list pineapple, so I ordered it with confidence — but it arrived with a chunk of pineapple inside. Thankfully I noticed before eating. The server who took it back seemed annoyed, but the larger issue is the lack of communication between staff. For anyone with allergies: even if you put it in the reservation notes and communicate it once, repeat it multiple times to be safe.
I also tried the Romanian donuts. The toppings were tasty, but the donuts themselves lacked flavor. And at the end of the meal, my server asked me directly how much I would tip, rather than if I wanted to. It was awkward given the poor service, so I declined, and she was respectful of that. Afterward, I did some research and learned that locals often don’t tip at all, or they simply round up to the nearest leu. Tourists, however, are often targeted for higher tips (10% or more). My advice: don’t feel pressured. If you do want to tip, just do what the locals do — round up to the nearest dollar.
In short, Hanu' lui Manuc is worth seeing for its history and atmosphere, but I cannot recommend it for food, service, or allergy safety. For fellow tourists, especially from Western countries: visit for the setting, but temper your...

Read moreAmazingly BAD!!! When I first arrived to this restaurant I can say that it was an beautiful place to visit! We sit to the table, as we order the food it camed to us very quickly!! My first impression of the food is that it was unacceptable!! We ordered the traditional soup.. I haven't eaten it before but I think it was definitely not as it should be!! No taste, plain water with tomatoes, some overcooked beans and 2 pieces of pork from another place cooked! Served in bread which for me did not spoil, made with yeast and oil. Normally it should be on a sourdough bread with a crispy and thick crust to be able to keep the soup inside... it's not enough that it was tasteless, but if you don't manage to eat it within 5 minutes, the bad bread absorbs it and it has no substance. After us came the side dishes, an indifferent and very poor quality eggplant and then a wrong appetizer which we didn't order but I didn't even understand what it was... I think it was at least that had a substantial taste. Finally I get to the mains which were a variety of meats. Everything was badly cooked, the kebab prepared from lidl, the chicken indifferent as well as its salt, the beef abused with a sensual aroma of lamb and garlic, the pork neck I would have expected at least a more tender piece... but it was also abused!! and the side dishes .. the canned pickled cucumber, the cabbage ok a good effort and half a kilo of mustard to drown your pain. In the end, he brought us a wrong bill, which I complained about, and then they brought the right one! in general, if you want to become a FOOD VICTIM , this is a good place to come!! It's a shame they DONT have delicious Romanian food in such a beautiful place!! It's not difficult guys, it just takes love...
