Culinary Crossover with Room for Improvement - Toro Latin Gastro Bar
Top-notch service, great drinks, and lively atmosphere at Toro Latin Gastro Bar are undermined by a somewhat disjointed fusion menu of Latin American and Japanese cuisines.
Highlights:
Stellar service and ambiance Excellent selection of well-mixed drinks Zesty and savory guacamole
Downsides:
Fusion menu can be confusing - tacos and sushi side by side Tacos lack perfect flavor balance Chips, served with guacamole, aren't authentic Mexican fare Overall, while the service and atmosphere are impressive, the cuisine needs refining. The fusion concept has potential if executed with more focus.
Venturing into the fusion food scene can often be a gamble, and Toro Latin Gastro Bar is no exception. Despite commendable service and a vibrant atmosphere, my culinary experience was slightly muddled due to a somewhat disjointed fusion menu.
The service was exemplary, with staff that was quick, attentive, and eager to enhance our dining experience. The atmosphere was vibrant, fun, and certainly contributed to the overall charm of the place. Not to mention, the bar boasted a fine selection of drinks, each expertly mixed and refreshingly delightful.
However, the fusion menu left me a little bemused. Blending Latin American and Japanese cuisines is an ambitious endeavor, and it seemed a bit jarring to munch on tacos while observing neighboring patrons savor sushi. The disconnection between the cuisines made for an eclectic, but somewhat confusing, culinary experience.
As for the food I ordered, it was a mixed bag. The guacamole was a standout, boasting a well-balanced flavor that was both zesty and savory. The tacos, however, were just okay. They lacked that perfect harmony of flavors that makes a taco truly shine.
The chips accompanying the guacamole were flaky, differing significantly from traditional Mexican fare. It left me questioning the authenticity and intention behind the dish.
And then there were the calamari, which were decent but didn't stand out in any particular way.
Overall, Toro Latin Gastro Bar certainly has its charm. Its commendable service and lively atmosphere make it a place worth visiting. However, the fusion menu could use some refining, and the food, while good, isn't perfect. With some adjustments and perhaps a bit more focus on the execution of their fusion concept, Toro Latin Gastro Bar has the potential to make a real mark on the...
Read moreHORRIBLE SERVICE! I am shocked by the rating of this place. We had lunch here and the place was pretty empty (max 3 other tables were busy). We first ordered some lemonades that came completely unsweetened. It took 20 MINUTES and us asking 3 times for the waitress to bring us some honey or sugar. Then we ordered 4 portions of food, two being meat (steak and chicken) for which we ordered truffle fries as a side. The first two portions (tacos and burger) arrived together with one portion of truffle fries. Two of us finished eating, the fries were already cold and dry and still no meats. It took OVER A HALF AN HOUR for them to arrive. And surprise, they arrived without the second portion of truffle fries. The steak was getting cold and we kept asking about the fries. At this point the waitress started blatantly ignoring us. After some more persistence on our side she told us in a very annoyed tone “you’ll get them when they are done”. No apology, no nothing. This was AN HOUR AND A HALF after getting to the restaurant. I would assume 90 MINUTES is enough to make some fries, but clearly not at this place. By the time the fries arrived the already overcooked steak (I was expecting a medium but got at least a well done) was already cold. This was supposed to be a special anniversary lunch but it was completely ruined by the very poor service. Needless to say we will never return again. WE DO NOT...
Read moreThis place came recommend to us from friends and Culture Trip, and basically every food site we checked out. The ambiance was nice, nothing particularly interesting (looked like a million places in San Francisco). The mixture of people there was interesting - lots of groups that seemed to be part Serbian and part foreign. The problem with this place is that the food just isn't very good and it's almost as expensive as a place in San Francisco (picture happy hour prices at an expensive place). I will note that I've lived all over Latin America and have spent most of my life in California (with a strong Mexican influence on the cuisine) and I have to say that the food at Toro just didn't have anything in the way of flavor. It was trying to be fusion cuisine but totally missed the mark. It's a Tapa's menu and we tried the recommended dish from every category and I wasn't wowed by anything on the menu at all. Was really expecting something and was completely disappointed. Also - the views were ok, but it's not like they're incredible rooftop views or something. The thing that makes Belgrade interesting is all the old buildings with character - this was just a view of a river... You can see that in almost any city...
