A very different and refreshing Indian Food experience than what is considered âIndianâ cuisine in South Africa.
Unfortunately, Indian food in Johannesburg especially, has been represented as cheap takeaways of Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma and Vindaloo, along with insipid Biryanis. The Indian restaurants that are sit down have jaded and gaudy fake brass utensils and maroon table cloths, as if all of them came together to design it the same, so whether you eat in Blairgowrie, Boksburg or Blair-Atholl, the kitsch and insipidness is the same. There are a few restaurants that include a few authentic dishes, but they are far and in between.
Modern Tailors changes that, I would call their food Indian âFusionâ where they have taken Western dishes and added Indian twists, or taken Indian dishes and changed the textures and flavour profiles and Westernized it.
Indian Cuisine is vast and complex, and they have curated some very interesting and unique dishes from that.
The decor is interesting and service is very efficient, even when they are at 100% capacity.
Somehow food appeared on the table magically fast, which makes me think that they cook dishes in advance to serve when ordered. Not a bad thing and also imparts them with flavour. The great Biryani houses in India also follow this method.
This restaurant belongs to the same group as Doppio Zero, and they have executed this brilliantly. I have a very strong feeling that you will see a few more Tailors opening around the country and I think that would be a good thing.
I ordered Goat Salli (a goat curry which comes from Parsi cuisine, Persians who settled in India almost a 1000 years ago), an Afghani Lamb Pulao (a lamb pilaf inspired by Afghanistan) and for dessert a Nankhatai cheesecake, a cheesecake which almost tastes like Barfee. The mutton was fatty and not to my taste, but that is on me.
Definitely recommended.

Read moreI love Indian food so much that when we lived in Berlin we ate it once every week or 2 and had our favorite Indian resto cater my sonâs baptism. But now that we live in Geneva, we have no place to eat good affordable Indian food so when I found out that there was FANTASTIC Indian food near our hotel, I told my family that we must eat there. I canât remember the last time Iâve had Indian food.
And boy I was NOT DISAPPOINTED. Everything from the nostalgic yet fabulous ambiance & decor to the attentive servers and the food was AMAZING. The manager accommodated us even if we had no reservations on a Friday payday night. It had that chic club vibe with the music, but we could still converse which I like very much. Btw I love the old school iron which my grandma used with coal. It really brought me back.
The complimentary appetizer chips was delicious. They have sharing menus but we opted for individual orders:
Sweetcorn/Cheese/Green chilli Samosas yummy starter BUTTER CARLIC NAAN best Iâve had! CHICKEN MAKHANI this buttered chicken was a great intro to Indian for my 9yo STEAMED BASMATI paired with perfectly cooked rice TANDOORI PRAWNS delicious seafood that I was craving CHICKEN BIRYANI super generous portion with Tailored Dhal & sour milk
I had my food with LITCHI & SUGARCANE MOJITO while my husband and son shared a virgin version. So delicious!!!
Our server NICOLE was lovely, attentive and made great recommendations. She patiently answered all our questions.
Admittedly we ordered too much for 2 adults and 1 child but we didnât care. We were just so ecstatic to have amazing Indian food!
I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Indian food or those who are curious to try the very best versions of...
Read moreWent for late lunch/dinner this past Sat. Atmosphere is nice and based off the rose colada cocktail, I was excited about what the meal would be like. My mother ordered the chicken Biriyani and I ordered the Durban Lamb Curry, both arrived cold as if it had been warmed in a microwave and it didn't heat through properly. The worst part were the potatoes in the food which had that fridge taste as if they had been cooked the day before (likely the case). I notified our waitress, Angel who was a trainee (and serving on her own with no supervision) She had limited knowledge of what exactly were in the cocktails and I had to explain a few times that the food was cold and potatoes "gassy". One of the managers I guess then came to the table to apologise and when my food was brought back it was the same case with the potatoes. He offered to change my order and I opted for the lamb rogan josh because it did not contain potatoes This was not as tasty and ultimately not what I wanted to eat. I had one piece and bagged the rest. He offered a Gulab Cheesecake Dessert (which is new on their menu) as an apology and I asked if we could have tea along with it. The owner was present the entire time and 2 other managers but were not notified/aware of what was going on. I asked for the bill...R900 later and I had to laugh when I saw I was billed for the tea and definitely not worth your money. Get a takeaway from Bismillah in Fordsburg...You'll be better off at a fraction of the cost! Poor Angel not set up for success at all. If she is a trainee, then you'd expect one of the 4 managers I'd seen actually training her and not all standing guarding the door. Taste your food and adopt a hands...
