Thai Ying — Restaurant in George

As I have become aware of my love for Thai food, so has my skeptism when reviewing food. Also, since becoming a vegan, flavour and texture is something all the more important without the umami flavour meats naturally add to food.

That being said this restaurant wasn't as half as bad as Bei Bei (Chinese restaurant in the area I didn't bother to review), however I did not have the greatest experience here. On the up side spring rolls were tasty. Phad Thai was a bit on the salty side and myself and the friendly waitress focused so much on making sure there was no diary, even after I mentioned vegan a few times the rice had egg in it. The manager also indicated that a vegan tom yum would not be possible by indicating it's never been made that way, lol he clearly hasn't experienced the vegan fever that is in Cape Town where there a very delicious tom yum soups without diary.

This experience makes me appreciate restaurants who, even if they not vegan friendly, make an extra effort to accommodate the customer or different diets. Would not go back here but it would be okay if you're into average Thai food or you're a meat lover.

First time visit. Ordered Pork ribs (self) and Massaman currie (wife). Flavours were wonderful and tasted like the real deal from Thailand Quality of the pork was poor. Pork ribs were of the cheapest cut. About half of the dish were bones and fat. The massaman currie my wife had was delicious. This is mostly a take away joint and not set properly as a dine in restaurant. Considering that, the prices are way too high. Tom yum soup R80! Nothing awesome, so won't recommend it to the serious...

5 stars + Food is authentic and packed with flavours. It can take some time (about 20min) but the food is worth the wait! No doubt. The flavours come in waves and each bite is divine. Great service and thoughtfulness from the staff and maitre d'.

Spent 3 nights in Plett over Easter weekend, tried Thai Ying on Friday night and couldn't wait to return on Sunday night (unfortunately it was closed)! Still thinking about their food. Definitely worth a...
