An Unexpected Gem – Best Dining Experience in Plett! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
At first glance, The Fat Fish is easy to overlook – tucked away with a rather modest logo that doesn’t hint at what awaits inside. But once you step in, it’s nothing short of exceptional. The restaurant is built into the natural stone, and those original rocks are still visible inside, giving the space a unique and cozy charm. We were seated near the fireplace, which added a warm and welcoming atmosphere on a cooler evening.
The food? Absolutely outstanding from start to finish. We began with sushi and salmon sashimi – both incredibly fresh, with the sashimi truly out of this world. For mains, the Parmesan Kingklip was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, while the tagliatelle with mussels was rich and satisfying. And just when we thought it couldn’t get better – came the dessert: the cheesecake brûlée, a signature dish by Duval, was the perfect crown to an already unforgettable meal.
Special mention to our waiter Pieter – fast, friendly, understated, and extremely competent. He made the evening even more enjoyable with his professional and attentive service.
We were so impressed, we booked again for the following evening – without a doubt the best dining experience we’ve had in Plettenberg Bay. A true hidden treasure!
Update after 2 days: Excellent place, we e joyed the food, the hospitality of the service Pieter and his very well caring manager. For our dessert malva pudding we give him the idea of getting warm vanilla sauce ( custard) and the manager just decides to offer us the dessert on the house. I told him that we did not complain but he insisted. That’s how the customer relationship should work. Bravo Btw, for second time we got the same sushi platter plus salmon sashimi. Sashimi out of this world. Oysters were not cheap but very delicious and premium quality. The whole fish and the Thai like...
Read moreIntroduction:
First and foremost, as a long-term vegan living in Plettenberg Bay, it is difficult to find restaurants that have great vegan-friendly items on their menus (however strange or unexpected that may sound to some of you reading this).
I was very surprised to see that The Fat Fish, here in Plettenberg Bay, had anything that I may enjoy to eat (besides some high quality, but basic, coincidentally vegan sushi). Not only did they have, at least, one vegan item — it was marked with a "(VG)" for me to easily see, which freed me from having to ask my waiter/waitress, who often have to ask the chefs, if there was anything on the menu that happened to be without animal product based ingredients.
Details:
I had the Roasted Cauliflower Chickpea Red Curry, which was on their daily specials menu at the time (although I dream for it to be included in their main menu). I went there to meet a close friend of mine, who wanted to go back to the restaurant since their most recent renovation. We met for dinner at 18:00 on Tuesday the 10th of this month, and we were served by a very lovely lady, Nicky.
Food:
This was easily the best curry I have ever had in a restaurant. I am deeply impressed by every single factor of the meal and I cannot wait to have it again. This dish is easily in the top three best vegan dishes in the town. Very well priced, considering the quality of the ingredients and the skill required to create and curate such a great dish.
Service:
Nicky was a great waitress and I would wish to be served by her again in the future. The entire team there was welcoming and focussed.
Atmosphere:
The space has had a recent glow-up, and it looks amazing. Truly a beautiful and classy place to enjoy a comfortable and delicious meal with loved ones. Warm by the fire, I enjoyed...
Read moreTonight was our worst dinner experience in South Africa. We came to The Fat Fish because it was recommended by our host. I don’t know where I should start. There were so many people in the restaurant (a normal Monday evening on 6:30pm), it was loud, the waiters and waitresses were running around as they were completely lost. I compared them to those wild chickens, which are running around the streets because it totally looked like that.
After 20 minutes I could order the wine. Before that nothing happened! I heard also the people from our next table complaining how long they waited for their meals.
As a starter we ordered the octopus and some sushi - the octopus was the worst I ever had, it was hard and the sauce was not good. The sushi was ok, but I had a better one in Cap Agulhas and many other places. As a main course we had the queen prawns and the seafood pasta. The prawns were ok, but they forgot the dip. The seafood pasta was with a kind of spinach sauce and some mussels, calamari and hake - not good at all. In the meantime our waiter forgot another glass of wine we ordered. I couldn’t help but wonder but this was the worst dinner we had in ZA.
I really can‘t understand the good reviews and recommendations. At one Restaurant on right we had the best lunch ever: at Mobys 😍 it was so delicious, the waiters and waitresses were so nice, the view and athmosphere was incredible - not to compair with our dinner tonight. You know - on holiday you have not much time - so don‘t spend it on places like The Fat Fish - which is completely overrated and not worth your money and time! Go to other nice places and enjoy your time :) we wasted here 2-3 hours for a starter and a...
