Unfortunately the option to not allocate stars is not available for this review. John Dorys Sun Coast definitely deserves a minus 1 for the appalling service that we received this evening.
An incredibly special occasion to celebrate my niece's 8th birthday turned terribly sour with us opting to dine at John Dorys in Sun Coast.
Upon our arrival, our family of 14 were seated. Once our drink orders were placed and everyone began to relax, our waitress advises us that several items were not available. A simple item like Red Bull. They were not stocked with Red Bull original or watermelon, no gins except Gordons, no Hansa beers. Which eatery on a Friday night will not have stock of Red Bull. A drink that is used in numerous mixtures.
We perused the menu again and were advised that there wasn't many options available due to no stock. My husband then visited the bar area and assisted the friendly bartender who was open to his suggestions to mix our own drinks. He advised her on some mixes to ensure we received drinks similar to what we originally ordered.
Once again the feeling to celebrate gripped us and we eased into the mood. We ordered our starters, only to have further confusion once it arrived. Starters for 2 separate patrons were placed on one Platter. A request for another platter took ages to get to our table so enjoying a meal together was not possible as everyone received their meals àt different times.
The most frustrating part of the evening was when our we placed our main meal orders and were told that the establishment did not have queen prawns. How can a seafood restaurant not have their best seller on a Friday night? After a chat with the manageress on duty, queen prawns were "borrowed" from a neighboring restaurant to ensure we received what we ordered. These meals get to the table only to be the incorrect orders. A complain to the manageress proved futile as we were extremely hungry and after a horrendous night of complains we had reached our height of frustration. We ate merely to say we had eaten.
The bill was paid cause we are decent good natured individuals who will not put another person out of pocket irrelevant of the extenuating circumstances. Outside the restaurant, a gentleman claiming to be the owner was made aware of our terrible experience. He proved to be a man complete with every excuse in the book and left us more annoyed than complacent.
Never is a strong word, however it is not strong enough for how we feel about John Dorys Sun Coast. Rest assured we will not attend this...
Read moreJohn Dory's Suncoast - Disappointed. Giving 1 star just for atmosphere and the drink.
Overall food was not up to scratch and mediocre. What happened to flavour?
STARTERS - Ordered oysters and sushi. Sushi was OK but the oysters wow! Worst experience. Received oysters in a bowl full of water with grit, small pieces of shells and what looked like sand. As for the oysters it was filled grit and fine pieces of cracked shells. Asked for a oyster fork for the oysters received a normal fork 🤣 After cleaning and scratching the oyster out was left unsatisfied and miserable due to the dirty water and gritty oyster.
MAIN - Ordered the platter for 2. Savoury rice, rice not fully cooked and vegetables was raw. Muscles well 2 per person definitely makes it platter for 2 😂 No flavour, just a muscle with unseasoned flavourfuless white sauce. Squid heads and calamari tubes, flavorless and slightly burnt. Prawns, mushy. Like how do you get prawns to be this texture. The sauce and flavour on it was lacking. Had to use the peri peri sauce just to give it some taste. Chips, the only thing on this platter which was actually good. Hake, was ok. Would have been good if the platter was served with lemon just to bring out the flavour.
After eating asked for wet wipes, wait or said she will bring a bowl to wash hands. She came back with bowl filled with boiling water. Where's the lemons? 😂
Haaaiyaaahh never again 🤣
Rather put the extra R100 or R200 do yourself a favor and go to Cape Town Fish Market or John...
Read moreI will not fault the food, that was very good .My husband knows I am a critic when it comes to eating out at restaurants. I believe that a restaurant not only needs to have great food but good customer service and overall good atmosphere .Although I know the waiters and waitresses' probably wish to be at home celebrating the festive season with loved ones thus this could be the reason for unhappy faces .
I for one always smile but no matter how many smiles I gave ,I did not get 1 in return .1st of all the sushi order was incorrect ,we waited for 5 min until we saw a lady at the door tried to get her attention and mentioned to her ,instead of her taking the plate she said I will call your waiter .Do they not help each other out. There were like 4 tables in front of us with used dishes etc and 2 waitresses standing by the door folding their hands .Yet again do they not help each other .
We only saw our waiter 2x ,once to take our order and the next to correct the order .After that he did not come to us at all even to take payment .We found ourselves looking for help once or 2x to get something .My advice guys you rather be seated on the inside ,maybe then you will have the best service .
Through all of this we was not rude we even said thanks and went our way . I do not want any free meal or compensation but to merely make the establishment aware of such things and maybe get the staff some customer service training .Hopefully next time we do support we would get...
