When first entering, we were greeted at the front door and let in by what I assume was one of the cooks. This gave me a generally good impression of what the service experience would be, but honestly I was wrong. The guy that seated us was not the friendliest, and the attentiveness to our table was not great either. It was about 7:30 on a Wednesday and it was not crowded at all initially. We started off by getting the red wine of the week. They let us try it, but I made the mistake of saying I liked it as not to disturb the grumpy people handling our food even further. My mom thought it tasted like the bottle had been opened several days prior and was currently fermenting which I realized was very likely the case considering the after taste it gave of pickled olives. Next we got our food which was okay. The croquettes were average, and the eggplant and cannelloni came out a bit cold. The eggplant did taste pretty good and was quite tender though. I will also note the pasta on the cannelloni was a bit overcooked. Portions are pretty small, so we ordered the Spanish omelette which was also a bit average and cold but not bad on the flavor scale. We capped off the rest of the meal with two churros, which I will give credit, were pretty good because they were the hottest food we received that night. Expresso was also ordered but I will note one of them was about two thirds as full as the other which came across pretty unprofessional in a country with highly upheld coffee culture. Another negative note was that we were right by the kitchen and were able to see one of the cooks actively handling his phone in the kitchen. Ew.
There were other tourist that came in a little after us and seemed to be getting slightly more attentive service. Ultimately, I don’t think they are very nice to tourist because grumpy dude was flirting with the local girls and showing gratitude to those he knew.
I spent 8 days in Spain and enjoyed every single restaurant I picked with high marks on google. I will not be generous with my opinions this time. Do better by treating people with respect, serving food when it’s hot, and maybe not charging an arm and a leg for dwarfed portions. Will not be returning on my next journey...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews for Amades, my wife and I decided to have dinner there during our first night in Barcelona. Let me be brutally honest... I'm not sure if they paid people to put those reviews online, but the place is a dump. That's the reason its in an alley and not on a main road. People who rated this 5-stars need to get out more often. I gave it 1-star, and was being generous! Gordon Ramsay or Wolfgang Puck need not worry. Perhaps there are so many Hipsters and Influences who are clueless, that they will talk up anything just to get a like. We ordered the bread, Rib Eye steak and the Paella. All three were an incredible disappointment. Cost 90 euro total with one-drink each. The steak was very low grade, extremely rubbery. Definitely not the type of steak we are accustomed to (I actually think it was 3-day old prime rib??). And the Paella was terrible. Worst I've every had. We made reservations, but when we arrived we were embarrassed... no reservations needed, trust me on this. For the same price we could have had a nice sit down dinner, with real tables and chairs, and a waiter. One with a table cloth, linen and a real steak knife. Not the type you bought when you were a freshmen living on your own for the first time. It reminded me more of the filthy coney island diners that used to be open in the ghettoes of Detroit, that we would only eat at on a late night binge after the bars closed, only to regret the next day.
There are way too many options to choose in Barcelona, then to settle for Amades. Such a major disappointment. My wife vouched to never trust online reviews again... especially when they are obviously from friends, Hipsters, and Influencers who have become the...
Read moreI’ve had nothing but delicious food while visiting Barcelona until now. I was so excited to try this place as I had come by the other night hoping to get in, but they were completely booked- the restaurant is on the smaller side. We ordered the Paella, Patatas Bravas, Vegetable Gyoza, and the Croqettas. First of all, we sat in the back and there was no air conditioning. A couple of other patrons got up and left because they couldn’t stand the heat. We should have followed them. The Seafood Paella was a huge disappointment. It was basically a pan of rice with a few shrimp (unshelled), a few sausages and I’m not even sure if there was squid mixed in. The base flavor was tomato sauce which sadly overpowered the entire dish. The patatas bravas weren’t crunchy but soft and soggy. The sauce was flavorful but wish they had drizzled more of it. The gyozas and croquettes were pedestrian and nothing special. I expected more from a 5 star restaurant.
Response to restaurant: I assure you there was no mistake. The A/C was broken, and patrons that were sitting across from us had walked out. The food was subpar at best. I don’t know the specific ingredients that were used- am I suppose to? I’m simply describing my experience at Amades and what the food...
