I go to Barcelona regularly and have tried many different brunch places but never any of the Brunch and Cake chain. We went to the one in plaza reail. Firstly, we walked to the door and asked for a table for 3, and got directed back outside to a stand by the terrace. This wasn’t a problem at all but there were a few tables inside and then, while we were standing there, some tables left. There seemed to be no urgency whatsoever from the staff to clear the tables and sit us down. A group of 5 guys then walked to the door and were sat down before us by a member of staff. This member of staff then looked out the door and saw us and gave a panicked look as she obviously didn’t know we were waiting. These things happen but it’s more annoying as the staff make such a big deal of making you go and wait next to the post on the terrace. You need to decide whether waiting by the post is important or not. When the staff had finally mustered up the enthusiasm to clear us a table we were led inside. Once inside, the first thing I noticed was the silence. Deathly silence. No music, no chatting, no hustle and bustle, nothing. There was zero atmosphere in there. The staff were walking around in some sort of daze, no urgency or rush whatsoever. We ordered coffees and our waiter went off to get them, the drinks counter is somewhere out the back which I think only adds to the non-atmosphere. I like to see the barista in action. We made a snap decision there and then to leave. If I’m going to spend 20+euros on a brunch I want a bit of atmosphere in the restaurant. And a bit of enthusiasm from the staff would help.
As for the decor, if you are into soulless Instagram posing then this could be for you. The place does look quite battered though. The tables are annoyingly small, I can imagine they are difficult to eat off.
I can’t comment on the food as I didn’t stay to eat, however, I will say I did look at someone’s plate of eggs Benedict and it looked incredibly bland. No dressings, seasonings or finishing touches.
There are soooo many amazing brunch places in Barcelona, please try them before wasting...
Read moreVenturing into "Brunch & Cake" on a Monday morning, I was surprised to find myself amidst a queue at 11 AM, a testament to its popularity even on what many would consider the start of a slow, tourist-free week. After a brief wait of about 20 minutes, the anticipation built up, hinting at something extraordinary on the other side of the doors. That anticipation was not misplaced.
Each dish we ordered—and we sampled four different ones—was a work of art in its own right. It's clear that the chefs pay meticulous attention not only to the flavors but to the presentation of each meal. The taste was superb, but it was the design and presentation that truly captivated me. The attention to detail, the use of colors, the taste, and the overall palette were impressive. It felt as if every plate was thoughtfully crafted to be a feast for the eyes as much as for the palate.
The experience was made all the more pleasant by the friendly staff. Despite the limited seating, which might suggest a cramped space, the atmosphere was cozy, inviting us to linger longer than we might have planned.
We left with the satisfaction of having discovered a gem where the culinary arts are celebrated with every dish served. This is a place to which I eagerly look forward to returning, a spot that promises not just a meal, but an...
Read moreAfter reviewing the website, the brunch options looked very delicious but trying to navigate the different location’s menus were not as easy as it should’ve been. While staying in the Gothic Quarter, I wanted to experience pretty presentation and exquisite flavor in one. Presentation of drinks and food is why I selected Brunch and Cake but didn’t feel that impressed by taste after my experience. The menu lacks in brunch craft cocktails. My mimosa was ok, nothing special. I saw the blue martini drink and while it is a very beautiful way to present a banana smoothie, I would’ve loved the option of a pretty and flavorful brunch cocktail. I ordered the Avocado Benedict and had bacon added, there wasn’t much flavor to the dish. We chose to sit outside because it was hot in the restaurant with poor air circulation. If you decide to sit outside, there is a 10% surcharge to dine outside, so basically sweat inside or sweat outside and pay more for a bare minimal breeze. The service was ok, as the server herself was pleasant but it took 30mins to receive a drink and a total of 1hr30mins to just have breakfast on a week day. I wish the flavor matched the...
