This one was an insider recommendation as I had the pleasure of meeting the owner at a jazz club, so when she mentioned her husband and her owned a restaurant that I should check out and I realised it had been open just 6 months but had a 4.6* rating on Google I was happy to oblige.
As always I’m the first one to arrive because my remote working hours don’t lend me well to late dinners. I instantly felt comfortable and at home in the restaurant with the furnishings, decor and music.
I met Luis, my friends husband and head chef and he recommended to me the duck magret which came in three different sizes and a sirloin special that was off the menu. I was craving meat so I ordered both, the first in just a tapa size so I could taste it without filling up, and then the sirloin for a main.
Similar to Regadera this restaurant has an open plan kitchen so you can see the chef preparing and cooking your food which I love.
The duck was probably the best duck dish I’ve ever eaten. Served medium rare and sliced like a steak, it melted in the mouth and the jus it was cooked in I could have bottled up and taken with me on my travels. An exceptional start.
The sirloin dish came out and it was huge. 400g worth of steak, twice what I would usually eat in a meal. The steak was the main attraction, and it was served with a small side of potato, kimchi and cherry tomatoes. It would have been perfect shared between two people with an added side salad. It was cooked on the rarer side of medium rare (Luis did check in with me when he put it down if it was cooked to my liking which I appreciated) and when I saw it didn’t come with any jus or sauce I panicked for a second, thought about requesting some of the duck magret jus to accompany it and then thought better of it, as it was prepared how it was meant to to prepared. Probably I was French in a past life because like Manu on My Kitchen Rules I’m obsessed with sauce on steaks - my favs being Bearnaise, cafe de Paris butter or a jus (funnily enough all of these sauces are French).
After taking a bite I realised why it was served as it was, with just a sprinkling of rock salt. The quality of the meat was celebrated by the method of cooking (Josper grill) and the simple seasoning. It was extremely flavoursome, juicy and tender and the accompaniment of the kimchi in the potato was a beautiful pairing of acid for the rich and salty meat. The food at this restaurant heroes the quality ingredients and care and attention paid during the cooking process. It was simple food done very well and with love.
I asked for half of my steak to be prepared para llevar (takeaway) and because the meal had been protein heavy rather than carb heavy I did what I don’t usually do and I ordered a desert. The cold poached pear stuffed with a kind of mousse, drizzled with white and dark chocolate and served with fruit and walnuts didn’t excite me as much as the first two courses, but the free glass of lemoncello that came with the bill did.
The bill was a few euro cheaper than Regadera despite extra inclusions (desert and bread) and given the 400g steak would have served two people this was exceptional value.
Same as Regadera I give Brasas Bar Karibu a 5/5 rating, but I’m terms of preference I prefer this one more more than Regadera, and wouldn’t have hesitated to return and try more of the menu if I was staying in Cordoba longer. I especially loved that fact that many of the mains were optionally served in tapa sizes so you could try more dishes even if dining solo, and the tasting menu which included around six dishes was just €13 including a drink which is outstanding value. A high must if visiting Cordoba and say hello to Arlene and Luis for me if you have the...
Read moreSmall menu with really delicious food to a very good and fair price. The tuna came with fresh oranges and a really well tasting dressing. The salad as a main cause was nothing too special, the oxtail however was so soft and tasty, really extraordinary good. The optics of the meals almost exceeded the taste in quality. Everything looked like in a 5-star-restaurant but was still enough to properly fill your belly. The chef came to our table to make sure that everything had been all right (which was defenitely the case!!!) and the evening was finally made perfect by a desert consisting of a faboulous cheese and chocolat cake and a lemon cream with potted lemons. Really the most recommendable restaurant in Cordoba for everyone who wants to enjoy a magnificent evening in a small restaurant with charming furnishings and really...
Read moreThis is a fantastic restaurant. Service is attentive and every course we had was beautifully prepared. We both started with the gambas (prawns). Fresh and flavoursome with a balanced amount of garlic and chilli. Don’t forget the bread to mop up the juice! I had the sirloin for main. Tender and flavoursome and beautifully chargrilled. Wife had the duck breast and exclaimed “one of the best duck dishes” she has ever had. Accompanied with a well priced bottle of Rioja red. Poached pear with chocolate for my esposa and ‘chocolate volcano’ for me for dessert were both excellent. Do yourself a favour. Give this place a try. You will not be disappointed. 104 euro for 3 courses for 2, including pre dinner drink, bottle of red, after dinner digestive and coffee. Worth...
