A friend recommended Casa Varona. It was our last & BEST meal in Madrid 6 day visit

Indoor seating only, high tables which my husband dislikes strongly. Hectic air con. Too cold for me. Lunch visit.

Sweet service.

You ordered using a paper list of offerings. Lots of nice wines by the glass. Lots of wines on display. There was a cover charge of €4 On top of retail price to drink in the restaurant.

See pic of bill for pricing

Recommendations Gazpacho, Grated tomato on bread. Warm salad of asparagus, cherry tomatoes, Parmesan

Ok but not great Spanish Omelette.

Good but not good for your health ; Crispy Pork belly single portion

Bottle of Rose (only on offer) excellent €20

The atmosphere at night would be great Felt it was very local, little to no tourists- my preference

Good coffees. Lovely dessert recommendation of...

We went to eat some tapas and 1/2 raciones. Ordered 1/2 russian salad, 1/2 puntillas, 1 huevos rotos and a cup of white wine "Altos de Torona".

The wine (3,30€) was good, a bit fuzzy and soft in taste. We got some olives to go with it, on the house.

Russian salad was fresh and tasty, but got charged 6,50€ (full 8,50€?). It comes with some tuna and pepper on top.

The puntillitas (fried tiny squids) were tasty too, well fried, and go well with the lemon. 6€ seems fair for half portion.

The huevos rotos with serrano jam was delicious, a bit salty, but goes great with the complimentary bread. 11,60€ and no half portion available.

Overall good, a bit pricey but...

This is an awesome tapas place. Not sure what the issue with the service is with several reviewers. There is a system: you check the form for your food and order your drinks at the bar. Yes, yo do need to get out of your chair and walk to the bar in front of you. The ladies were delightful and the food very quick and impressive. I ordered the bean(faves), avocado and mango salad. It was a lot so they packed me the leftovers. I also ordered the gambas (shrimp on garlic sauce) just a bit spicy but delish and finally I ordered the salomillo on a toast. All was amazing and complemented my sangria perfectly. This is a great site for tapas. Do...

Staff: Friendly and sweet Atmosphere: laid back and local - you order your wine from the bar and your food from a paper menu you hand in. Food: Tasty! Gazpacho was soooooo good we ordered another round! Fresh and flavourful 5/5 Grilled Artichoke w/ jamon was cooked perfectly and nicely balanced 5/5 Grilled anchovies lacked seasoning 3/5 Shishito Peppers were simple but delicious 5/5 Drink: lots of local wines to choose from, glasses starting at €2.80 The menu is extensive! Lots of things to try. Will be back!

Recommended to us by a friend. Did not disappoint. They kindly gave us an English menu as a lot of amazing foods on the menu to navigate. You mark in the menu what you want to order and order at the bar. The green and white bean salad with avocado and mango was chosen as it was something different and it was really delicious. The garlic prawns, with a hint of chilli, delicious and the Tosta solomillo (steak) was SO good. Get there early as by the time we left there was not an empty seat.
