AVOID IF YOU ARE NOT A REGULAR - Jose Luis is usually very good. Tonight, at this location, the head waiter treated me like a tourist to be hurried along (though I was dressed in a blazer, etc.) I was served a practically raw hamburger in a rush, with part of my drink order completely forgotten. I was being so rushed by the staff that I did not bother to ask for the missing drink again. Usually, with a glass of wine you get crisps or olives; tonight, no one bothered to bring anything, or ask me if I wanted more wine when my glass was empty. In short, NOT the usual Jose Luis experience!

Last year they refurbished this Jose Luis, and it looks nice. But it seems that at this location, the head waiter forgot the old formula - good service and good food! Apparently, if they think you are a tourist (I guess they assumed that about me, though I have been coming to Madrid and Jose Luis regularly for over a decade), the staff at Serrano Jose Luis can't be bothered with you.

Next week, I will go to the one General Oraa again! Tonight, I should have either gone there, or just bought a sandwich at the Dia 100 meters away. Sad to see a classic institution...

We had a truly disappointing experience during our recent visit. We ordered a variety of tapas to try, but things went downhill quickly.

First, the chicken fingers arrived undercooked and had an odd taste. Then came the beef lomo de vaca trinchado, which also tasted off. When we politely asked about the meat, the restaurant manager, Abdol, came to our table and addressed my daughter — the only Spanish speaker among us — in an unacceptably rude and confrontational manner.

Despite returning the dish, it was still included in the bill. We paid the full amount without dispute, but I later approached the manager to express concern about his behavior toward my daughter. Instead of apologizing or showing understanding, he doubled down, claiming the meat “didn’t taste bad” and dismissing our experience entirely.

The issue wasn’t only the food, but the complete lack of professionalism and respect shown by management. Needless to say, we will not be returning, and I hope this feedback is taken seriously to improve the treatment of...

Surprise! My grilled artichoke dish was very different than when you order a grilled artichoke in California and it was also so tasty! Usually we cut the artichoke in half, wrap in foil for a little bit, and then open and grill with garlic lemon butter. This artichoke dish was cross cut into flower shapes and grilled. It was delicious - that said I would cut back on giving it a wash of olive oil at the last second. Ask for extra lemon. Ate every last bite. My husband really enjoyed his hake tacos. We sat outside and received excellent service. Our waitress suggested the Tarta de Limon for my husband and I ordered the tarta de chocolate. I believe my husband got the last piece of Tarta de Limon and Lordy it was good!!! When you come in, ask if they have any tarta de limon so they can save you a piece. It is kind of like Lemon Meringue pie with a slight cake texture. They also have a very nice sit down restaurant inside - we just wanted to sit outside. It is an upper scale restaurant with...

5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ————————————————————— Cervecería José Luis is one of those places I always go back to and recommend to anyone who wants to try authentic Spanish tapas. It’s cozy, elegant yet casual at the same time, with a very local atmosphere and friendly service that makes the whole experience easy and enjoyable. When it comes to food, everything I’ve tried is good, but there are a few essentials that stand out: the Croquetas de Jamón Serrano, which many agree are some of the best they’ve ever had; the Spanish tortilla, simple but perfectly made; and the melted brie cheese with Jamón Serrano, which is always a hit. I also enjoy the Russian salad and the fried calamari every now and then — both very good — though I see them more as part of the variety rather than the star dishes. And then there’s the Lemon Tart… which honestly deserves a special mention. It’s spectacular — fresh, creamy, perfectly balanced — and without a doubt one of the best I’ve ever had. I enjoy it both at the restaurant and as takeaway, since it has basically become a must every time I go. All in all, José Luis is the perfect spot both for first-time visitors to Madrid who want to discover traditional tapas, and for those of us looking for a comfort-food place we can always count on. 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Review for José Luis Cervecería I had an amazing experience at José Luis Cervecería! The service was outstanding—everyone was incredibly polite, funny, and attentive, making us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the croquetas, ensaladilla rusa, and the pincho—each dish was perfectly made, flavorful, and felt authentically Spanish. And the best part? Everything was reasonably priced, offering great value for such high-quality food. The ambiance was elegant and classy, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or a long meal with friends, José Luis Cervecería is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended!

Volveremos.
