This monument stands in tribute to Emilio Castelar, a Spanish politician, and president of the First Spanish Republic. Not only was he a national leader, he was a noted writer and journalist and left a legacy in print of political science such as a history of the Republican Movement in Europe amongst other works.
The monument features a stone base with figures on all four sides. On the main side, facing southwards, is the bronze figure of Emilio Castelar, and at his feet lies a marble Venus, an allegory to the truth. Flanking him on either side are two classical public speakers, Cicero and Demosthenes who observe and listening to Castelar.
