I went here with a group of friends for what was supposed to be a special treat because we live in different places and don't get together a lot. What followed was a series of some of the weirdest behavior from service I've ever experienced in a restaurant.
While ordering, I asked whether there was any bell pepper (which I strongly dislike) in the Pad Thai because the menu just listed ‚vegetables‘ as part of the dish. I was strongly reassured there was no bell pepper in it. What arrived was a Pad Thai full of red bell pepper. I didn’t even say anything and just swapped dishes with someone else at the table.
We continued our dinner which was overall fine, even though I will say that the only standouts were the sushi rolls and drinks, our mains were mediocre at best.
We were shown the dessert menu and offered to order more drinks - we passed on the dessert but ordered two more drinks. 5 minutes after our drinks were brought to the table (my friend had only taken two sips of her wine), a waitress came over with the cheque and practically asked us to leave. We were extremely confused as the new drinks had just been brought to the table moments earlier - my friend said we could free up the table but asked to have her glass of wine removed from the bill as she wasn’t really going to have the chance to drink it. We were informed we only had the table for 2 hours (we were not informed about this when being seated, we weren’t served for the first 20 minutes of us being at the restaurant and there were very long breaks between our dishes arriving). When told that we hadn’t been aware of the time window, the response was that ‚they didn’t have to tell us because it said so in the email confirmation’. To be very clear: we had absolutely no problem leaving after 2 hours but a) would have never ever ordered more drinks minutes before having to leave and b) think that a quick reminder of how long we will have the table for when being seated is absolute standard practice and could have avoided any issues
This sparked a major discussion with service in which my friend also brought up the bell peppers in my dish. Instead of just owning it, I was told 'you said it wasn’t an allergy, just preference‘ - but that was never the point. I simply asked because I wanted to order a dish at a restaurant that I would be able to enjoy, apparently that is an unknown concept at Mudra. I didn’t complain when it happened, I didn’t send the dish back, I didn’t ask for it to be taken off the bill. What should have been said when it came up is: ‚I'm sorry and thanks for letting me know, I didn’t realize that dish had bell peppers in it when you asked‘.
My friend's request to have the wine removed from the bill was refused and at that point we asked to speak to the manager who ended up taking it off. She also said we could stay for another 15 minutes but at that stage all we wanted is to get out of there as quickly as possible.
Overall, I can’t remember any other time in which I was met with so much attitude from service st a restaurant. This could have easily been avoided at so many points during the evening. Please don’t offer dessert & drinks to people when you know you’ll kick them out 5 minutes later or at least say ‚just so you are aware, you have the table until time x, so we need to make this quick.'
My friends who live in Madrid wanted to take their family here when they are visiting in June, needless to say that won’t be happening.
Decor is cute. Will...
Read moreI have visited this restaurant twice, and we were planning on going again a third time very soon in order to bring my mother-in-law, but after our last experience I, nor anyone I went here with, plan to ever return nor recommend this restaurant.
To begin, the main dishes are fairly weak and could use improvement in texture. I’ve tried all the mains, and they seem to have a problem with making the items watery. Also, I don't understand why they offer pad thai. I thought it might be an exciting take on a common dish, but Mudra’s version is bland and boring. The starters have pretty good flavor but are quite unsubstantial and not worth the price. Unfortunately, there are simply not enough interesting items on the menu.
The only positive aspect is the decent sushi; however, it's not good enough to justify enduring the poor quality service from the waitstaff and even the manager. The last time we visited Mudra, we had friends visiting from out of town who were excited to eat here, but we all left very disappointed due to the abysmal service. You are allowed only two hours to dine, which I am fine with; however, the service needs to be quick enough to ensure you have enough time to eat. In our situation, the wait staff put us in a corner and forgot about us. They did not acknowledge us for the first 20 minutes after seating us, and we literally had to wave them down to take our drink orders. Then, it took more than an hour to get our main dishes!
And it gets worse! Ten minutes before the two-hour mark, the waitress asked if we wanted dessert and brought us the menus again. Since they brought us the menus, we assumed there was plenty of time to order, so we ordered another round of cocktails. But then, within a few minutes of bringing the drinks, they brought us the check. When we said we weren't ready because they had just brought our drinks, they said it had been two hours and there were people waiting for our table. We asked why they brought the menus again, and they argued that bringing out the menu is just restaurant policy and does not mean we have more time to eat. We were shocked, given how much food and drinks we had ordered. It was an outrageously awful experience, and we felt used for our money. The profit-driven motivation of the restaurant was painfully evident, rather than a focus on providing a quality dining experience.
I really wouldn't recommend this place; they don't even have excellent food to justify the mistreatment. I had sincerely hoped this would become our regular spot since we live very close, especially as we are looking for a fine vegan dining restaurant. But certainly not, and I will never...
Read moreHomemade bread for starters with flavoured vegan butter. The spread had a light spongy texture, and the bread was warm, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. For drinks we tried the Green Paradise and Greek Lemon teas. Both were great but the Paradise one was twice as expensive as it was in the cocktail list. I would therefore recommend Greek Lemon. We had the artichoke “tiradito” - amazing presentation and powerful taste. Probably the best dish we had. We also tried the Uramaki dragon which is a vegan sushi. Cool presentation and decent taste. It had seaweed to add that sea flavour so characteristic of this dish. Then we had Pad Thai. A bit of a disappointment as it was nothing exciting. We’ve tried other vegan Pad Thai, where they put the tempeh in long stripes with a lot more marinated flavour, or more crunch. This one seemed a bit bland, and the noodles were a bit chewy probably from being just over cooked. Finally we had the cheesecake. OMG, I would return just for this. Do yourself a favour and try it. We accompanied it with a massive macha tea which was delightful. Price wise it was decent. Around 40 per person. Great service. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. But I just did not enjoy that much...
