Went to Madrid for a week with my girlfriend, we visited a lot of vegan restaurants due to our preferences.
Although the food was mostly delicious, the chorizo dish fell short of the others, it wasn't bad, just wasnt as good as the other dishes we shared (croquettes, tortilla and the quesadilla)
At first the vibe was awesome, anti bigotry vibe, and I thought it would be filled with open minded people like me and my partner.
Not sure if we were treated differently because we are cis, or if its because i was a man (there was even a poster on full display saying "all men are scum" proudly on display, so im thinking the latter)
There was a noticeable difference in the friendliness we received, compared to other guests (who were all female at the time of dining), and i personally received a very cold reception.
You would expect an establishment that portrays itself as being anti-bigotry would be anti bigoted, but alas, that wasnt the case.
If youre a man, or cis couple, youre probably not welcome. I'd never felt more uncomfortable in my life, and the treatment i experienced was shocking (glaring looks, unfriendly demeanour, short abrupt conversations when ordering food, basically being told im scum, simply for existing... Imagine an establishment that had a poster saying "all LGBTQ are scum", "all women are scum", "all ethnic minorities are scum" on display, the place would rightfully be boycotted, or even protested.
This experience is a shame, as the food itself was amazing, and cannot fault the food.
Obviously, as a cis couple, we weren't their preferred clientele, and that was made very obvious.
2* rating, only because the food was perfect, i am just against bigotry in all its forms - and not just the ones that i pick and choose! The hypocrisy was ridiculous.
Again, i emphasize that the food was amazing, that cannot be faulted. I suppose its the perfect place for misandrists to go to eat, if that is...
Read moreIf you're looking for a restaurant that's a true reflection of the times—and the absolute downfall of the conservative agenda—then look no further than oveja negra. Honestly, this place is my personal safe space, and I loved every single second of it. The Food: Pure, Unadulterated Perfection First things first: the food is a complete, undeniable 10/10. As a vegetarian, the creativity and depth of flavor in their entirely vegan menu is breathtaking. Every dish I've tried has been flawlessly executed, and I'd confidently say they have some of the best plant-based cooking I've ever experienced. My only, and I mean only, minor note is that I wish the potato wedges portion size were a little more generous. They are ridiculously good—perfectly crispy outside, fluffy inside—and you just crave more! Seriously, that's the only thing keeping this entire experience from being an 11/10.
Smashing the Patriarchy This is where oveja negra truly shines and earns its title as a conservative's nightmare (which, for me, is pure joy). The atmosphere here is unapologetically progressive and welcoming to everyone. Non-Gender Toilets? Check. Complimentary Feminine Hygiene Products? Check. Dogs and Young Children Warmly Welcomed and Allowed? Check. Every sign, piece of art, and even the menu layout is a playful, yet pointed, dig at the patriarchy. It's vibrant, it's loud, and it absolutely fosters a huge safe space for all guests. It’s a place where you can relax, be yourself, and know that your values are shared and celebrated. The restaurant also stands in solidarity with a clear Gaza message. From 🍉 Pins to Palestine Coke. This isn't just a place to eat incredible vegan food; it's a small act of revolution. It's welcoming, delicious, and exactly the kind of unapologetic establishment the world needs right now. Go for the food, stay for the radical good vibes. You...
Read moreI was in Madrid for a couple of days and was looking for vegan restaurants. I found this place and walked 20 min from my hotel to dine-in. On Friday night 18/10 at 8pm I approached the host behind the bar to ask for a table for 1 - she was not friendly at all. She told me there’s nothing available. I looked around and except for 2 people the entire place was empty with plenty of available tables. When I stated this - she told me they have bookings and I could potentially get in at around 10pm (after ~2 hours). At that moment, I figured she didn’t want a well dressed middle-aged English speaking man of color to be served and so I thanked her for her time and walked away. When I exited the restaurant, I clicked on the reservation option on Google maps and sure enough my doubt was confirmed - reservations for a table for 1 were available with different time slots with the earliest available 20 minutes later.
Lucky for me, I was able to find another vegan joint a block down the road that exclusively served falafels and it was one...
