We left feeling we were scammed because the price of the food changed from menu to bill. We were charged 86 Euros for 8 prawns.
The server offered us several appetizers and when we said we didn’t want 3 or 4 appetizers because it was too much food as we were going to order a main course for each person, he said he could bring us a little of each, like an appetizer sampler. When the bill arrived, we saw each kind of seafood (3 kinds) had been charged separately and the prawns alone had come to 86 Euros. For 8 prawns, this comes to 10.75 Euros per prawn, which needless to say is outrageous. When we asked about it, the server got quite angry saying that’s what they charge for “red prawns” because they are sold by weight at market price. However, this was not stated anywhere on the menu where the only appetizer prawns were listed at 22 Euros, nor did the server tell us this. Plus, we didn’t order “red prawns.” This place is a total scam. Fortunately, this was the only place we had such a bad experience. The rest of our stay in Madrid and in other parts of Spain was wonderful.
Interestingly, when we were ordering and asked about one of the main courses, the server said “trust me, it’s a great dish, why would I lie to you when our customers are our bread and butter?” But lie he did. They are dishonest and take advantage of tourists (and locals as I have now seen on a number of review sites). There are many friendlier places with integrity in the area. Don’t be fooled – run...
Read moreO'Caldiño is a cozy gem that serves authentic Galician cuisine located jst off of the Calle Principal de Vergara in Madrid. When you walk in you notice the fresh seafood displayed in the bar and the rich, warm tones of the woodwork in this restaurant that caters mainly to local diners.
The waiter was attentive and efficient. The bread basket a delight of crusty on the outside, soft on the inside bread and a handful of browned to crunchy bread bits that were delicious.
The wine list is adequate and we ordered an excellent red blend from the Tomás Postigo winery in the Del Ribera del Duero region. It was excellent!
We started with the caldo Gallego and some pimientos de Padrón, both of which were excellent. The soup has a pork base and features local green spinach and potatoes.
We followed up with a few gambas (prawns) each, which were succulent and delicious. The gambas were a special treat as they are not cheap. Six large prawns was $95.
Next we shared a Lacón con Grelos y Chorizo de Galicia. The lacón was great and not too salty. Finshed off the dinner with a light dessert of Crema de Queso Mascarpone with fresh mango and strawberries.
Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone...
Read moreWas going to give it 5 stars until we got the bill. Food was good and service was excellent the entire meal. Our bill was €67.10 for my husband and and I, we gave €107.10, however our waiter never came back with our €40 change. When we asked him about it, he insisted that he gave us the change and said it was already in our wallet. We tried to talk to multiple waiters and asked them to check the security camera which was facing our table directly, however they wouldn’t (one said the camera didn’t work and another said they will check tomorrow). Took multiple attempts of talking to different waiters and no one would take responsibility. After going back and forth for more than 10 minutes with 5 different waiters, a different waiter that spoke better English finally gave us our change. It’s unfortunate our dining experience ended this way and that our waiter thought we would scam them over €40 rather than consider the possibility that he...
